Idris Elba is a talented actor who has been a big name across Hollywood. He has worked on multiple projects from sitcoms to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His skill as an actor has only evolved throughout his career, making it possible for him to reach as far as he has in the industry. A common question that is asked to him as an actor of his caliber is also one which infuriates him the most.
For the actor, such questions can be triggering as it feels that he gets to be someone who represents people of color, which he of course does not mind. However, it can also be limiting for him as an actor who aspires to be an individual of his own accord.
Idris Elba Stands Up Against Identity Politics
In an interview with Esquire, Idris Elba finally stood up again about identity politics. He pointed out how often enough actors who are people of color do not get to go beyond that title. Elba wants to be an individual who is not just someone who is defined by their color but by how much talent they have as an actor.
“As humans, we are obsessed with race,” he continued. “And that obsession can really hinder people’s aspirations, hinder people’s growth. Racism should be a topic for discussion, sure. Racism is very real. But from my perspective, it’s only as powerful as you allow it to be.”
He confirmed that he has faced racism no doubt. However, it does not mean that most interviews he gives would ask him about his experiences when these would not be questions asked of various other actors. This has changed him so much that he does not refer to himself as a black actor but just as an actor. It gives him more room for opportunities and does not limit him from the things he could achieve.

Idris Elba Wants To Be An Idol For Everyone
Idris Elba confirmed that even though he may have the title of being the first black individual for some or other achievement, it is not his primary goal. Instead, he aspires to be the first person as an individual rather than being reduced to his color.
“I accept that it is part of my journey to be aware that, in many cases, I might be the first to look like me to do a certain thing, and that’s good, to leave as part of my legacy. So that other people, Black kids, but also white kids growing up in the circumstances I grew up in, are able to see there was a kid who came from Canning Town who ended up doing what I do. It can be done.”
He wants other people to be inspired by his journey and his hardships regardless of who they are and where they are situated. Elba wants to see himself in the future as someone kids of every color look forward to and not just black kids.
