Florence Pugh is quickly rising through the ranks in Hollywood. She has already amassed impressive filmography thanks to being in movies like Lady Macbeth, Outlaw King, and Little Women. While all of these films raised her profile in Hollywood, it can’t be denied that Ari Aster’s Midsommar immensely contributed to getting the spotlight on her.
The flower dress that’s seen at the end of the film became instantly recognizable as the movie went viral and Pugh’s performance was praised in it. As such, many Hollywood stars wanted that unique dress. This included Ariana Grande as well as Halsey. But did any of them get it?
Ariana Grande Desperately Wanted Florence Pugh’s Midsommar Dress
In 2020, A24, the producers of Midsommar, put up a charity auction with various iconic items from their movies. One of these items was the May Queen flower dress that Florence Pugh wore in the film. Ariana Grande expressed her interest in buying that dress by writing on Instagram that “I was already planning to have it made anyway bye.” Pugh urged her on and said that there are even “hand holes for wine.” Here’s a screenshot of their conversation from Instagram stories:
Apart from Grande, Halsey too was eyeing the dress. She said in a tweet, “me, to myself: don’t bid for the midsommar may queen outfit don’t bid for the midsommar may queen outfit don’t bid for the midsommar may queen outfit…”
However, none of them could get the dress because the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures got it for $65,000. The best thing about the Academy getting the May Queen flower dress is that now the general public can see it as well. But how would the Piano singer have looked in the dress? There’s no way to know that now, but recently, Pugh described how she felt while shooting in it.
Florence Pugh Reveals Her Issues With The Midsommar Dress
Florence Pugh was recently on the Hot Ones where she enjoyed spicy chicken as host Sean Evans asked the actress what it felt like to wear the flower dress in Midsommar. The Black Widow actress said that the dress, although stunning and made with precision, was uncomfortable for her to wear. As per Pugh:
“That dress was so heavy. It was so heavy, and these amazing costume makers and designers spent weeks making that. And all of those flowers were individually made. They were hand-made. And they have wire in them, every single one of those flowers. So it obviously adds to the weight of the dress. It would take like 15 minutes or 20 minutes to get in and out of it. So I tried to stay still. So it meant that, on the hot days, I’d get f**king hot. That’s why I had the fan.”
Regarding the film itself, Pugh sat down for an interview with the Off Menu podcast and revealed that the character was strenuous for her to play. She expressed that she had never felt as connected to any character before. Pugh said:
“When I did it, I was so wrapped up in her and I’ve never had this ever before with any of my characters. I’d never played someone that was in that much pain before, and I would put myself in really shitty situations that maybe other actors don’t need to do but I would just be imagining the worst things.”
Pugh has added more remarkable films to her list after Midsommar. She was recently seen in The Wonder and A Good Person. She will next be seen in Oppenheimer and Dune: Part 2.
Midsommar is available on Hulu, Oppenheimer will be released on 21 July 2023.
