When Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield Joined Forces with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the superhero world exploded! It was insane seeing the Spider-Men of three different generations come together onscreen. However, that left fans wondering about the fate of other characters including Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane.
Peter Parker and MJ are one of the O.G. couples in the entertainment industry, let alone the superhero universe. And while Tom Holland and Zendaya are incredible in their portrayals, fans will always have a soft spot for Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire’s pairing. Therefore, it’s only natural to wonder if the two will meet again as Peter and MJ and it looks like Kirsten Dunst is all for the idea, no matter the pay disparity she faced in Spider-Man.
Kirsten Dunst Wants to Return as MJ
During a conversation with Variety in 2021, Kirsten Dunst stated that she would love to return to the Spider-Man franchise, and if the opportunity arises, she would say yes in a heartbeat. Dunst then joked that her character would be old and have little spider babies with Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker.
“I would do it. Why not? That would be fun. I would never say no to something like that. I’d be old MJ at this point with little Spidey babies.”
Dunst is more than willing to return to the Spider-Man universe as she has stated so time and again. In a 2022 interview with People, the actress said that it was a “no-brainer” for her.
“Of course I would. Of course. I’ve been asked about that a few times. That’s a no-brainer. That was a huge part of my career and my life.”
Well, if Sam Raimi ever decides to revive his Spider-Man franchise, he certainly would not have to look for a new MJ. In fact, he wouldn’t even have to look for another Peter as Maguire, too, is ready to don the Spidey suit once again. The duo is ready, all we need now is someone to take the first step!
Kirsten Dunst Talks about the Pay Gap in Spider-Man
Thanks to Dunst’s words and enthusiasm, we know that she had a ball working on the Spider-Man movies. The Bring It On actress won’t think twice before reprising her role if anyone ever asks her to do so. And this is despite the fact that there was a huge pay gap between her and Maguire.
Dunst told The Independent that there was an extreme difference between what she and her co-star made for Spider-Man. She stated, “The pay disparity between me and Spider-Man was very extreme. I didn’t even think about it. But you know who was on the cover of the second Spider-Man poster? Spider-Man and ME.”
This wasn’t the only time Dunst claimed to have been paid a lot less than Maguire. While talking to Variety about Hollywood’s gender wage gap, Dunst stated,
“Because I was young, I thought, ‘Oh wow, I am getting paid a lot of money for the Spide-Man movies. But definitely the men were getting paid more. So yes, I experienced that.”
Dunst’s salary for the Spider-Man films is unknown. However, reportedly Maguire made $4 million, $17 million, and $15 million for Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, and Spider-Man 3 respectively. And this does not include what he earned from the box office profits of the films.
You can stream all three Spider-Man films on Disney+.
