Why Daniel Day-Lewis had to Make That Decision?

The connection between Daniel Day-Lewis and the Royal Shakespeare Company began while he was a budding young actor in the 1970s.  It didn’t take him long to find himself on the stage of the RSC, an esteemed institution renowned for nurturing some of the best theatrical talents in the world.

Day-Lewis’ stint at the Royal Shakespeare Company was known for a number of remarkable Shakespearean performances that astounded both audiences and critics. His portrayal of Romeo in Romeo and Juliet showcased his ability to convey youthful passion and tragedy with equal intensity.

Due to Day-Lewis’ commitment to his roles, his intense preparation, and his willingness to immerse himself in each character’s world, RSC gave him an offer to work for lifetime there. But for some cause, he declined it.

The Oscar winner decided against pursuing a career in the theater because he couldn’t tolerate giving matinee performances to unpleasant children who would just giggle throughout them at his tights and codpiece.

You walk on stage and you had to wait for 10 minutes for them to stop laughing before you could even get a word out.”

He recalls, “I said, ‘Here’s the thing, I’m gonna be unemployed when I leave this room and I don’t know how long I’m going to be unemployed for, but, for however long it is, I would rather be unemployed than work with any of you people…

“Strangely enough, I haven’t been invited back to the Royal Shakespeare Company since that time. They thought I was mad.

Nonetheless, Day-Lewis’s association with the Royal Shakespeare Company solidified his stature as an actor.

Day-Lewis’ representative made it clear following the release of Phantom Thread that he would be retiring for good. She went on to say,

Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”

Lewis expanded on his thoughts, saying “There’s something of the responsibility of the artist that hung over me. I need to believe in the value of what I’m doing.”
