Many Hollywood stars are known for the extreme measures they take in order to portray a character on screen. Some of them also opt for the technique called, method acting. While it does help them to bring out their best on stage, sometimes things go too far. And Brian Cox seemed worried about his Succession co-star Jeremy Strong could also follow the same path. Jeremy Strong and Cox starred in the 2018 comedy-drama, Succession.
Strong opted for method acting for his character, Kendall Roy, in the series. His efforts paid off as the American actor went on to win several awards for his performance in the show, including a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. However, there were some things that led the Red star to worry about his co-star.
Brian Cox Talks About Jeremy Strong’s Intense Method Acting
Jeremy Strong took several measures to put out his best performance in the 2018 HBO show, Succession. While he did his best for his character, his approach seemed a little too much for his co-star. Many of his co-stars have addressed the issues regarding his method acting approach and how it turned out to be problematic for the rest of the Succession cast.
And some were highly concerned for their co-stars, including the Troy actor Brian Cox. During an interview with the New Yorker, Cox expressed concern over The Gentlemen actor’s approach to method acting.
The Scottish actor described the approach as an “inability to separate yourself off while you’re doing the job” as he called it an “American disease.” He said that he is concerned that Strong may be going too far with method acting, saying that The Judge actor gets “obsessed with the work.”
I worry about what it does to him because if you can’t separate yourself — because you’re dealing with all of this material every day. You can’t live in it. Eventually, you get worn out.”
He also mentioned one of the great actors Daniel Day-Lewis who opted for method acting for his characters. But decided to retire after being “worn out” by the continuous experiments with his acting. The Irish actor is popular for going to intense levels to prepare for his role. But despite his successful ongoing Hollywood career, he announced his retirement after starring in Reynolds Woodcock’s Phantom Thread, for which he also received a nomination at the 90th Academy Awards.
Jeremy Strong Addresses Brian Cox’s Concern
Jeremy Strong finally addressed Brian Cox’s concerns during his recent interview with GQ Magazine. He also opened up about the issues raised by his Succession co-stars while working on the HBO show. He said, “Everyone’s entitled to have their own feelings.”
But when it came to the actor who portrayed his father in the HBO show, he had only one thing to say. “He’s earned the right to say whatever the f*ck he wants,” Strong said. He further mentioned that he feels “a lot of love for [his] siblings and [his] father in the show.”
He called his Succession co-stars a family saying, “You don’t always like the people that you love. I do always respect them.” The Succession star also said that he is not planning on changing his approach to acting as he never doubted it. He is set to reprise his Succession character in the upcoming season of the Succession.
