After the success of 2004’s The Notebook and Mean Girls, which are now deemed as classics, Rachel McAdams garnered immense fame for her immaculate performances in those projects. However, stepping into the world of stardom came with its own sets of headaches for the young actress, which made her take a big break from the realm of movies and shift to her home in Canada.
As a result, the actress went on to drop down several substantial roles in movies, including Mission: Impossible 3, Casino Royale, The Devil Wears Prada, and Iron Man, a decision she regrets.
Rachel McAdams was the initial choice for the role of Pepper Potts
Apart from Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark himself, one of the most important factors in MCU’s Iron Man movies was Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts, who played the love interest of Tony Stark. But before Gwyneth Paltrow was eventually selected for the role, Rachel McAdams revealed that she was initially approached to star in the ambitious project that would give birth to the MCU. However, considering that McAdams was suffering from several mental health issues at the time, she decided to reject the offer.
Even though McAdams eventually landed the opportunity to star in the iconic universe as Dr. Christine in 2016’s Dr. Strange, she regrets not taking the role of Pepper Potts when it was offered.
Rachel McAdam regrets rejecting the offer to star in Iron Man
Being a part of the MCU from its very beginning has not only earned Gwyneth Paltrow a huge paycheck but has also cemented her place in the top tiers of the Industry over the years. Even though Rachel McAdams might not have been a huge fan of the IP at the time, The Notebook actress recently expressed her regrets for ditching the opportunity to grab the role. The actress described her disappointment by stating,
“I felt guilty for not capitalizing on the opportunity that I was being given, because I knew I was in such a lucky spot. But I also knew it wasn’t quite jiving with my personality and what I needed to stay sane. There were definitely some anxious moments of wondering if I was just throwing it all away, and why was I doing that? It’s taken years to understand what I intuitively was doing.”
The role of Pepper Potts isn’t the only major role that McAdams lost during her 2-year hiatus from Hollywood, as every movie she decided to drop during that period went on to become a huge success. But despite her regrets, the Mean Girls star explained that on looking back at those roles, she can’t see anyone else in those roles except the actresses that were hired for the jobs.
Iron Man is available to stream on Disney Plus.
