Sacha Baron Cohen is one of the most daring and controversial actors. His brand of entertainment is eccentric and triggers responses. He plays characters that not only act out a scene but bring about a reaction in others. He is known for his eccentric characters such as Borat, Ali G, Bruno, and General Aladeen.
The performer has done some really bizarre antics while in character, ones that could have landed him in a lot of trouble. However, the actor revealed one instance in which he had second thoughts about performing a stunt in front of the Australian Prime Minister, which would have ended up in his being banned from the continent.
The Various Faces Of Sacha Baron Cohen
Before the world came to know him as the Admiral General Aladeen, Sacha Baron Cohen started his career as a model and a TV presenter. He hosted many shows and was featured in a few advertisements. He also underwent clown training under noted master-clown Philip Gaulier. Cohen has claimed that clown training and the comedian Peter Sellers have been huge influences on his style.
Baron Cohen came to national prominence with his sketches as the character Ali G. The actor appeared as the British suburban character on The 11 O’Clock Show and then even received his own show called Da Ali G Show. He won the Best Newcomer at the British Comedy Awards for his character. Cohen got his own film called Ali G Indahouse.
The character was mostly known for his interactions and interviews with politicians who were unaware that Ali G was a character played by Sacha Baron Cohen. This was similar to his other characters such as the fashion show presenter Bruno Gehard, his characters in the show Who Is America? and most importantly the Kazakh TV journalist Borat Sagdiyev. The character gave the actor international stardom as he played the role of a politically incorrect journalist who has come to America to learn about their culture.
Sacha Baron Cohen’s One Regret
While Sacha Baron Cohen has gotten away with many antics, he has also been subject to criticism for his remarks and statements, albeit in the name of his characters. However, while the actor seems to have no boundaries when it comes to satirizing, he admitted that he once got scared and backed out of doing something.
In a Reddit AMA session in 2016, Sacha Baron Cohen admitted that he was to appear in a late-night talk show in Australia as his character Bruno and the Prime Minister of the country were supposed to be in attendance. He said,
“There was something that I regret not doing, which was, I was on this Australian late-night talk show, and the talent booker had made a massive mistake. He booked the Australian Prime Minister on the same talk show. I was doing Bruno, and I had a strip tease routine fully planned, including tearaway pants and this g-string.”
However, the actor said that he had planned an extensive routine and was almost ready to do it, but changed his mind at the last minute. He said,
“And my intention was to lap dance the Prime Minister of Australia and stick my crotch in his face. It would have been an international incident and probably would have got me barred from Australia. But, unfortunately, I wimped out of doing it and eventually was also barred by his own security.”
The show is speculated to be the Australian talk show ROVE and the PM was reported to be Kevin Rudd, who appeared in the show in 2009.
