Smith was married to actress Sheree Zampino but he was too attracted to Pinkett Smith, especially after he saw her in the TV series A Different World. Smith then had a realization that he wants to be with Pinkett Smith.

In a 2018 episode of Red Table Talk, Smith explained that he realized that he needs to be with Jada Pinkett Smith when he was at a restaurant with Sheree Zampino. The actor said,
“I had a realization I wasn’t with the person I was supposed to be with. I was sitting in a stall and I was crying and laughing uncontrollably, and I knew [Jada] was the woman I was supposed to be with, but I was never getting divorced… I went back out, sat down with Sheree, and started going back on with my life.”
It was then revealed that Zampino ended their marriage and Smith started dating Jada Pinkett Smith. After two years of dating, the two decided to get married.
The couple faced some issues in their marriage
Shortly after their marriage, in July 1998, the couple welcomed their first child, Jaden Smith. Two years, later they welcomed Willow Smith. Throughout their marriage, there have been several rumors about their split, but it got worse in the mid-2010s.
The couple has been very vocal about the challenges they have faced in their relationship. The two have confirmed that they split up in 2015 and Pinkett Smith had a brief romance with August Alsina at the time. However, the two reconciled and are still going strong today.
