Nobody predicted Ryan Gosling to be such a name in the industry. The La La Land actor recently spoke up on how everybody doubted his skills before his success. According to the Canadian actor, the filmmakers couldn’t think that the actor would go so big at the box office as they were unsure about his skills as a leading man.
The 42-year-old actor has been a part of many hits to date. Some of the notable projects include The Notebook, The Big Short, and La La Land. In an interview with GQ, Ryan Gosling revealed that in his initial days, he had to often hear that he has nothing to be a leading man only to ultimately prove them all wrong.
Ryan Gosling in his early Hollywood days
The Gray Man actor started his career as a child actor on television before landing roles in some independent movies. Ryan Gosling‘s fame and success were completely unexpected. Even during his childhood acting days, he couldn’t be seen often as the other children were better. Later the actor described that in his early days, how some directors thought that he lacked the skills to lead any project.
Speaking with GQ, the Drive star opened up about how he got his 2001’s The Believer and it is as strange as it sounds. According to Gosling, the director Henry Bean only thought of taking him as the lead actor only because he thought he wasn’t right for it.
“The fact that I wasn’t really right for it was exactly why he thought I was right for it.”
Ryan Gosling added that he also got the leading role in The Notebook as the director Nick Cassavetes wanted someone not to have those leading man qualities.
“straight up told me: ‘The fact that you have no natural leading man qualities is why I want you to be my leading man.'”
But the Oscar-nominated actor proved them all wrong as he went on to make a notable mark at the box office as the leading man. As the numbers speak, Ryan Gosling bagged a total of $1.12 billion from the worldwide box office. This also looks to increase more as the actor is all set to be seen in the upcoming Barbie featuring an ensemble cast. Surprisingly, Gosling was subjected to significant hate for his portrayal of Ken and he also spoke on it.
What did Ryan Gosling say about the Barbie online hate?
Barbie is a leading topic of discussion among ardent cinema fans since its announcement. The Greta Gerwig directorial based on the iconic Mattel toy line has a lot of fans hyped up for the project. But this also led to online toxicity where some fans and critics complained that Ryan Gosling’s Ken looks older than Margot Robbie‘s Barbie.
The father-to-two gave a strong reply and commented that the audiences are hypocrites.
“I would say, you know, if people don’t want to play with my Ken, there are many other Kens to play with… It is funny, this kind of clutching-your-pearls idea of, like, #notmyken. Like you ever thought about Ken before this? And everyone was fine with that, for him to have a job that is nothing. But suddenly, it’s like, ‘No, we’ve cared about Ken this whole time.'”
He added:
“No, you didn’t. You never did. You never cared. Barbie never f–ked with Ken. That’s the point. If you ever really cared about Ken, you would know that nobody cared about Ken. So your hypocrisy is exposed. This is why his story must be told.”
On the other hand, Margot Robbie also stated that Ken will be the greatest version of Ryan Gosling ever seen. With all the hype around it, Barbie is sure to be one of the most iconic or disastrous projects of all time. Besides Robbie and The Gray Man actor, the ensemble cast also includes Simu Liu, Will Ferrell, Kate McKinnon, Emma Mackey, Dua Lipa, John Cena, and many others.
Barbie will hit theaters on July 21, 2023.
