"I was shaped like Santa Claus": As if Gaining 43 lbs Was Not Enough, Christian Bale Shaved His Head With a Razor Blade Making His Director Panic Who Wanted His Hero to Be Slim

Bale is serious about his craft, he would give his absolute best to live the life of the character during the time of production. This often makes headlines as the actor’s extreme dedication never gets old. But it does land the actor on some situational hazards, this happened with the actor’s interaction with Ridley Scott.

There is no doubt that Christian Bale can play any character of any physical description. But playing different characters back-to-back for different movies is not a cakewalk either. After playing Irving Rosenfeld in American Hustle Bale was cast as Moses in Ridley Scott’s Biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings. The problem was that Bale had put so much weight on his role in American Hustle while the character of Moses required him to lose significant weight. Even Bale was doubtful about the role.

“I thought, ‘Not gonna do that.’ And I gave Ridley a fright because [Heston] was the iconic image of Moses, the long hair and the beard … and I had just made ‘American Hustle,’ and I walked into his office and I was shaped like Santa Claus but I’d shaved my head with a razor,” Bale once revealed in a news conference.

After his conversation with the director, Bale realized that Scott is pretty natural and experienced in handling the actors. “Clearly he [Scott] is a better actor than me… he just went, ‘Hmmmm, very short hair,'” Bale revealed. Although Bale thought he was putting the director in a panicking state, it was actually an understandable situation.

Christian Bale Felt Idiotic Before Playing Moses

Bale felt quite idiotic right before appearing in the 2014 epic movie. Speaking to Collider, the Oscar winner revealed the gravity of the character of epic proportions. “I’ve been bloody lucky, all right? This idiot, this idiot playing Moses. Wow, how can he do that?” Bale told Collider

“But that’s great now, you know, perfect what a challenge and like we were saying I knew nothing. Really, when I say that I knew the Ten Commandments, I knew the Sunday school stuff I knew the basics but that’s really knowing nothing about this character and when you read the Torah beginning to when you just go well that just blows my mind. It is so fascinating and you understand what a very human story this is in the midst of all of the epic spectacle that there is, there’s an absolutely beautiful human story and a story of revolution inside of there these fascinating toxic Union.”

The epic movie, however, did not perform well at the box office as it only collected $268 million globally on a budget of $140–200 million.
