When it comes to enjoying a classic sitcom, Courteney Cox’s Friends comes to mind first. Had it not been for this series, the meaning of a classic sitcom would be very different. There had been many famous celebrities who made an appearance for either one episode or more. Whether it was Jon Favreau or Paul Rudd, many of them managed to leave a mark on the fans like none other.
Tom Selleck’s Richard left a mark not only on the audience but on Monica Geller as well. Being a guest star on the show meant entering an already established family and quite literally being a guest amongst them. Although there had been a lot said about how open the cast was to guest stars, Selleck’s experience had been rather different.
Tom Selleck Was Anxious Behind The Scenes While Filming Alongside Courteney Cox
Tom Selleck played a character who might have become a permanent character on the show had Monica and Chandler not been as loved by the fans. Richard was a character who fused well with not just Courteney Cox‘s character but also every other character as well. However, it is not easy to adjust in a cast that already knows each other so well.
“I was scared to death,” Selleck stated. “I had done Taxi a long time before, but I hadn’t done a sitcom. And so, I was really nervous.”
Whether it was table readings or just mixing with them, he was always nervous about interacting with them. No matter how loved he was by the audience or how much the group tried to include him, there was always a sense of anxiousness he couldn’t get rid of so easily. Although, Jennifer Aniston had a lot of good things to say about him and how he was great to work with. She even called him an angel with a permanent halo on his head.
Courteney Cox Helped In Making Tom Selleck Comfortable On Set
Tom Selleck confirmed that the one person who helped him the most during his time on Friends was none other than Courteney Cox. She made him feel welcome and as a part of their group. No doubt the most amount of scenes he had out of anyone was Cox, so his comfort level with her was much more than the rest of them.
“Courteney helped a lot. Courteney’s a big help. But that group’s an incredible group of friends. They obviously became friends in life as well as on the show. And it shows. It was a wonderful place to work.”
Oftentimes guest stars have found themselves being very prominently outside of the group. Paul Rudd even felt like he was a prop rather than a character. However, Selleck was one who noticed how the cast was friends both within the show and outside. Moreover, everyone was trying their level best to make him feel included throughout his time on the series.
