Salma Hayek, the actress known for movies like Grown Ups and The Hitman’s Bodyguard, has had her fair share of passion projects throughout her Hollywood career. Talking about the beauty of a person and their soul, Hayek was initially terrified back in 2002.
Being of Mexican and American descent, Salma Hayek was nominated for the Oscars for the category of best actress. Revealing in an interview that she felt proud of herself and for all of Mexico, Hayek confessed that she was also scared and nervous because of it.
Salma Hayek Was Terrified After Starring in Frida
A movie depicting the life and journey of artist Frida Kahlo, Salma Hayek shined in the role back in 2002, in the movie Frida. Considered to be one of Hayek’s passion projects, Frida was met with overwhelming positiveness, but there were some critics, who bluntly stated that Hayek was ugly!
The movie got the Eternals actress her first Oscar nomination in the category for Best Actress back in 2002. Recalling the time, Salma Hayek talked about how she felt proud not only of herself but of all of Mexico as well. With such high hopes from the people, the actress confessed that she was also terrified and nervous the night before the Oscars Award ceremony!
“I was very scared the night before the nominations. There was so much anticipation in Mexico – so with the first nomination, my feeling was one of relief. Oh my god, at least we’ve got one. And then, the other ones came, it was very nice.”
The actress couldn’t feel more proud of herself since she revealed that nobody wanted to make Frida. In her interview, Hayek said that even though she wasn’t famous at that time, she single-handedly made the film possible and tried to create the film as close to her imagination as possible.

Salma Hayek Single-Handedly Created Frida
Long before she was famous, Hayek wanted to depict the life of artist Frida Kahlo. Being somewhat of a controversial figure, people were always finding ways to not make the movie. In an interview, the Desperado actress revealed that she single-handedly created the 2002 film and she was proud of it.
“I had a very specific take on it visually, and how I wanted the structure and the movie to be. I didn’t want it to be like a typical biopic. I wanted to have a different kind of artistic value visually, because she was an artist.
She further continued,
“And it was so hard to get it done because it was unusual, and she was unusual and nobody knew who she was. I’m very proud because I practically did it by myself against all odds when I was not very famous. [It was] a movie that nobody wanted to do.”
With Oscar nominations to her name and a controversial story to tell, Salam Hayek can be seen in Frida, with the movie available to stream on Paramount+.
