The Hollywood industry can be rough on people and Kate Winslet understands the ups and downs that come with the career she chose better than most. It takes a while for celebrities to understand where they stand and the power they might have. The way one looks, walks, and talks, can all determine the types of work one get. The industry is kind to not many people.
One can either be on top of their game or be pushed around beyond their control. No matter what, this feeling in the back of their minds can exist that they aren’t doing enough. Winslet went through something similar despite being one of the most respected and loved actresses in Hollywood. It wasn’t until the smashing success of one movie that her mind finally changed.
Kate Winslet Did Not Think She Fit In Hollywood
Kate Winslet may be one of the biggest actresses in Hollywood at the moment but no matter her success, she could not believe she fit in. The requirements that the industry had for the key to success were not all that she could fill. So a feeling settled onto her that all her hit movies came to be purely out of luck.
“I was scared of Hollywood. A big, scary place, where everyone had to be thin and look a certain way. And I knew that I did not look that way or feel like I fit there, so if I was ever going to belong, I had to earn my place. And to me, I hadn’t earned it. Titanic might have been a fluke. I had done Heavenly Creatures. I had done Sense and Sensibility, which I was nominated for an Academy Award for at the age of 19, but still I had this feeling of ‘maybe that was just luck.'”
She has done so many movies, but Titanic with Leonardo DiCaprio had absolutely broken the box office. But that was still not enough and all she could think of was that she made it this far in the industry all because of luck and nothing else outside of it.
Kate Winslet Changed Her Mind Seven Years After She Did Titanic
It wasn’t until Kate Winslet did Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, seven years after she did Titanic and two years after she became a mother that she started to let good her insecurities a little. The way that movie became a massive hit completely eradicated any form of doubt the actress had in her mind.
“When I became a mother at 25, all of that stuff evaporated completely. Then two years after she was born, I was asked to do Eternal Sunshine [of the Spotless Mind]. I do believe that was a huge turning point in my career, because from then on people suddenly went, ‘Oh, she can do that?!’”
She finally felt that she belonged and everyone could see the talent that was filled within her. Even now Kate Winslet remains to be one of the best actresses in the industry.
