Everyone is pretty much aware of Clooney’s successful career, but many may be unaware of the fact that the Argo star’s successful career was built on his failures and flops. Clooney’s name is today synonymous with commercially hit films but in the past, the actor had a few flops under his name as well. The biggest dark spot in Clooney’s career is the superhero movie, Batman and Robin.
George Clooney On The Underwhelming Performance Of Batman and Robin
The Descendants star’s 1997 Batman movie, Batman and Robin, was one of his biggest flops. Everything about Batman and Robin was problematic from the dialogue to the infamous n*pples of Batman. Batman and Robin was produced at an estimated budget between $ 125-160 million but despite a high budget, the film delivered unengaging action sequences. All the critics lashed out at George Clooney for the failure of the movie. Even though the movie’s budget was highly deviated to cast Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze. Clooney shared his experience of working with Schwarzenegger in Batman and Robin.
“Schwarzenegger was paid, I think, $25 million for that, which was like 20 times more than I was paid for it, and, you know, we never even worked together! We worked together one day. But I took all the heat.”
George Clooney’s Career Reformation
The ER star shared the life lessons he learned after being criticized for the failure of Batman and Robin. Clooney said that he realized that a good movie can not be created on bad scripts. The Descendants star recalled the time when he finally learned the importance of choosing the right film. The harsh yet impactful experience eventually helped the actor to transform his career.
“Now, fair deal; I was playing Batman and I wasn’t good in it, and it wasn’t a good film, but what I learned from that failure was, I had to rethink how I was working. Because now I wasn’t just an actor getting a role, I was being held responsible for the film itself.”
George Clooney learned that he needed to pick a script and story for his particular role. The superhero movie delivered by The Descendants star was surely a failure but the lessons learned from it were a treasure in the true sense.
“To me, I was still an actor getting a part. I was like, `I have to pick the script, not the part`. So the next script I did was `Out Of Sight` and the next I did was `Three Kings`. After that, `O Brother, Where Art Thou?`. Everybody would say that ‘Batman’ was not the best. But the good news for me was I was able to take that as a lesson, as opposed to a career-ended.”
It can be really tough to choose the right movie to work on and the pressure is something that is faced by actors across the globe. Clooney is not the only one who has become the victim of choosing the wrong project. But the experience Clooney learned from the Batman and Robin movie helped him to reshape his career and the star has never looked back ever since.
