Christopher Nolan brought together two of Hollywood’s best actors, Robert Downey Jr. and Cillian Murphy, in his biographical drama Oppenheimer. Starring alongside a great ensemble cast, the movie features Murphy as the lead character J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Downey Jr. as the American businessman Lewis Strauss. Their on-screen characters are known to have a complex relationship in the movie.
However, the Iron Man star has shared that at one point, he started feeling a little disoriented from his co-star, Cillian Murphy, as he got too immersed in the character of the theoretical physicist while filming.
Cillian Murphy Calls Robert Downey Jr. a Wonderful Partner
Cillian Murphy and the Marvel star Robert Downey Jr. shared the screen for the first time in Christopher Nolan‘s 2023 film Oppenheimer. And both actors are being highly praised for their amazing work in the biographical drama.
Not just critics and audience, the co-stars have also spoken highly of each other. Talking about The Avengers star in an interview, Cillian Murphy shared that he is “absolutely electrifying” and “mindblowing good” in his role.
He further shared that he considers his scenes with Robert Downey Jr. some of the best scenes from the movie, as he called him a wonderful scene partner.
“And then the scenes where we did get to work together, it was just the best. I mean, he’s the most wonderful scene partner.”
The 47-year-old Irish actor also stated that it was his and the Dolittle star’s scenes where the director let them loose and allowed them to improvise a little bit. He also mentioned that those were some of his favorite scenes in the movie.
Robert Downey Jr. Was Surprisingly Amazed By Cillian Murphy’s Passion
While Cillian Murphy called Robert Downey Jr. a wonderful scene partner, the Marvel star was also quite amazed at his dedication to his character. Talking about his Oppenheimer co-star, Downey Jr. said that he often saw the actor in J. Robert Oppenheimer’s character on the set. And sometimes, the Due Date star found his behavior a bit cold toward him.
He further stated that the Inception star is usually very nice, warm, and welcoming, however, it all changed as he got into his character. “But then we’d roll, And I’d feel like he was looking through me like I didn’t exist. And I was like that sucks,” he shared during an interview.
While his co-stars may not be a big fan of his onscreen persona in Oppenheimer, they have praised the actor for going off-limits in the movie. Downey Jr. has shared that Murphy did not take off while working on the film. Florence Pugh, who also starred alongside the Dunkirk actor, has said that Christopher Nolan had one of the more incredible leads with Cillian Murphy.
Oppenheimer is playing in theatres.
