Charlize Theron could have been a part of the critically acclaimed blockbuster Chicago. The 2002 musical black comedy movie starring Richard Gere and Catherine Zeta-Jones in the lead was also slated to have Theron before she was replaced with Renée Zellweger. The movie got a success on both critical as well as commercial grounds and even went on to receive 6 Academy Awards.
According to the Mad Max: Fury Road actress, she was the first choice for the role of Roxie Hart in the Rob Marshall directorial. But eventually, the story took a different turn when the director of the movie was changed and Marshall didn’t want Charlize Theron. The role eventually went to Renée Zellweger who also earned an Oscar nomination for that role.

But even after being a part of several highly successful projects, the Academy Award winner still regrets losing the 2002 musical Chicago. She revealed that after being associated with it for a short period, she lost the role to Renée Zellweger.
“For a while I was attached to ‘Chicago’. I got kicked off it. Yeah, the director kicked me off it.”
But even after losing the role, Charlize Theron didn’t have any bad feelings about Zellweger and spoke highly about her.

Chicago focuses on the story of Zellweger’s Roxie and Zeta-Jones’ Velma Kelly who played the role of two murderers waiting for their trial together in jail. The performances of the movie were widely appreciated by everyone and Renée Zellweger also won a Golden Globe for her performance. Speaking on her, Charlize Theron said.
“She did an amazing job. So yeah, I’m fully envious of what she did.”
Later, the Doctor Strange 2 actress also stated that she understood the director’s perspective and doesn’t have any complaints about it but still she “felt” something. But the actress also didn’t have to wait long before getting her hands on Monster the following year in 2003. The movie focuses on the life of a prostitute who turns into a serial killer and helped her bag an Academy Award for Best Actress.
The director Rob Marshall is presently busy with his upcoming The Little Mermaid which is getting widespread positive early reactions for the performances. On the other hand, Charlize Theron is all set to be seen in the upcoming Fast X where she will reprise her role of Cipher. As the actress is also a part of the MCU now, her next Big-screen appearance as Clea is also awaited.
