Scarlett Johansson has often voiced her rage for being pigeonholed into hyper-sexual roles early in her career despite s*x never being a huge part of her actual personality. The Black Widow actress is also credited for openly criticizing Marvel during Iron Man 2 for hyper-sexualizing female superheroes, a move with paved the way for Marvel’s changed outlook on the franchise’s female characters.
But again, everything went in vain after the actress, who often questioned the choice of being an object of desire in Hollywood, declared her unwavering support for the controversial director, Woody Allen, who often starred in his own films, for instance, Annie Hall (1977) that won four Oscars. For decades, Danny Farrow’s allegations of sexual abuse against her adopted father kept Allen under the radar.
Scarlett Johansson Gives Woody Allen A “God-level” Level Status
If Scarlett Johansson was a lawyer, controversial director, Woody Allen would have signed her up for life. The Iron Man 2 actress, who has often spoken about her pain of being “groomed and highly sexualized” in her early career, continues to describe unwavering support for the Grammy-winning director.
While it’s hard to deny that Woody Allen has graced Hollywood with back-to-back comedic hits, containing elements like bittersweet, slapstick, parody, and dark themes, offering a “God-level” status to the Swedish director sounds a bit too much. But Johansson feels otherwise. During Bruce Bozzi’s Table for Two podcasts, she, once again, praised the disgraced director non-grata.
Bozzi called himself an “epically huge fan” of Woody Allen. Johansson, on the other hand, shared an on-set “giggle-fest” she had with Allen and other cast members of Vicky Cristina Barcelona, over the phrase “spotted dick.” Johansson said:
“He couldn’t keep it together. It took a couple of takes and was like, giggles, giggles, giggle. I love Woody, I believe him, and I would work with him anytime.”
The Ghost World actor has, time and again, declared her love for the director. On the other hand, Allen described a “young Johansson” in his 2020 memoir as “not only gifted and beautiful, but sexually she was radioactive.” Well, in Allen’s case, the hypocrite actress may just have forgotten what “grooming” looks like.
Hollywood Didn’t Cancel “Pervert” Woody Allen
Woody Allen may have rocked Hollywood in the 90s with box-office performances of his films like Deconstructing Harry, Celebrity and Sweet, and Lowdown, but his popularity with critics and filmgoers suffered significantly whilst Danny Farrow’s (Allen’s adopted daughter) sexual abuse allegations against the Swedish director.
While Allen’s decade-long relationship with Mia Farrow needs no further narration, their praises for adopting children did turn into a curse when Mia Farrow covers a stack of explicit nude photos of her adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn, taken by the filmmaker.
Things turned out uglier after Danny Farrow, another adopted daughter of Allen, confessed to her mother that she was sexually molested by Allen at a young age. Ager a long, hard-fought court battle, the custody of all children was awarded to Mia Farrow and Woody Allen was quoted as a “self-absorbed, untrustworthy and insensitive” father in Judge Elliott Wilk’s scathing judgment.
But, not going behind bars, is not the most disappointing part. Hollywood did not cancel the director and he continued making blockbusters like Match Point, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and Cafe Society, eyeing god knows how many “young Johanssons” out there!
