In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Lawrence talked about a traumatic experience from her early career, when she was the victim of body shaming at the hands of an industry insider.

The actress revealed she was called “fat” and warned that she would be fired if she didn’t drastically reduce her weight. To add salt to the wound, she was shown pictures of herself with little to no clothing to inspire her to lose weight.

“Somebody told me I was fat and that I was going to get fired if I didn’t lose a certain amount of weight. They brought in pictures of me where I was basically naked, and told me to use them as motivation for my diet. I was a little girl. I was hurt. It doesn’t matter what accolades you get. I know it’ll never happen to me again. If anybody even tries to whisper the word ‘diet’, I’m like, ‘You can go **** yourself.”

By 2015, Jennifer Lawrence had taken a stand against Hollywood’s promotion of unrealistic beauty standards. She drew on her experiences with body shaming to add a clause to her contracts with movie studios: she would not significantly alter her appearance for a role.

Lawrence chose this out of concern for the well-being of young girls who might look up to her characters and for promoting body positivity. While preparing for her roles, Lawrence worked hard to build muscle rather than lose weight.

She was aware of the dangers associated with idealized body image ideals and sought to present a more positive image in the media.
