The Oscar-winning Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey has featured in several blockbusters and critically acclaimed movies. One of the most iconic characters of his career includes the role of the homicide detective, Rust Cohle, from HBO’s anthology series True Detective. He was reportedly the first actor to be cast in the show and was later joined by Woody Harrelson, who portrayed Cohle’s partner, Detective Marty Hart.
The series follows two detectives as they revisit one of their earlier investigations while dealing with their personal issues as well. Being an anthology, every season of the show focused on new characters and introduced a new cast. While it was one of the reasons the Interstellar star accepted the offer, he later shared that he missed playing Detective Rust Cohle.
Matthew McConaughey Misses Detective Rust Cohle
Apart from his incredible work on the silver screen, Matthew McConaughey has also given critically acclaimed performances in Television, including in HBO’s anthology series True Detective. The actor has shared that he believed that show was “hard to screw up” and accepted the offer just after reading the first two episodes of the series.
While he was confident that the show would do wonders, there was another reason to accept the offer. “That was always how I saw it. One season, eight episodes, a finite beginning, middle, and end, goodbye, look forward to watching it,” he shared.
The Gentleman star stated that if he had been required to return in a second or third season, he wouldn’t have said yes to True Detective. However, once the 8-episode series was over and he was done playing Rust Cohle, the actor shared that he missed him.
He shared that he missed watching True Detective on Sunday nights. “I was a happy man when we made that for six months. because I was on my own island,” he shared during an interview and even talked about the possibility of returning to the TV series.
Matthew McConaughey Wishes to Return to True Detective
Created by Nic Pizzolatto, True Detective is an anthology series and has featured multiple actors, including Matthew McConaughey, Rachel McAdams, Mahershala Ali, and many others throughout its four seasons. McConaughey claimed that he accepted the offer only because it was an anthology series and would not require him to come back in future seasons.
However. the actor has since changed his mind and wishes to return to the anthology crime drama. During his appearance on The Rich Eisner Show, the 53-year-old Oscar winner shared that he has talked to the show’s creator, Nic Pizzolatto, about it and would love to return to the show under the “right context.”
