“I wanted to do it really badly”: Arnold Schwarzenegger Blames Director for Killing His $216M Sequel Dream With Danny DeVito After Tragic Incident

When you see the name, Arnold Schwarzenegger, your mind wanders to gritty action sequences, blazing guns, a Herculean build, and of course, The Terminator. But besides genres that involved cyborg assassins and extraterrestrial warriors, the retired professional bodybuilder also explored the beloved world of comedy, which he dived into with 1988’s Twins.

Sadly enough, however, fans won’t be getting the much-awaited sequel to the hearty comedy anytime soon. Or ever.

The Long-Anticipated Sequel to Twins Isn’t Happening

Directed by Ivan Reitman, Twins is a family comedy starring Arnold Schwarzenegger (Julius) along with the iconic Danny DeVito (Vincent), built on a wacky premise of long-lost fraternal twins who reunite after years when the dashing but naive twin goes to L.A. in search of his morally corrupt brother; a classic tall guy short guy duo with a twist, if you will.

The film wasn’t just cherished by the audience, it also made a decent box office run, grossing $216.6 million against a budget of $18 million. For the longest time after the movie hit theatres, the director, along with the lead stars had been discussing a potential sequel titled Triplets. Eddie Murphy had even been rumored to be the new cast member in the second movie.

Fast forward to the fall of 2021, when after three long decades, Triplets was officially confirmed to be moving forward with stand-up comedian and actor Tracy Morgan joining Schwarzenegger, 75, and DeVito, 78. But tragedy struck the future of the sequel when Reitman passed away last year in February, after which his son, Jason Reitman, decided to hit the brakes on the project once and for all. And boy did that infuriate Schwarzenegger.

Why Arnold Schwarzenegger Scorned Jason Reitman’s Decision

Fans weren’t the only ones counting on the sequel to the peculiar comedy, the Predator star himself had been impatient about the project which held a special place in his heart. Not only Schwarzenegger, but even DeVito and the late director had all been just as invested in Triplets, both emotionally and financially. So, when the Canadian filmmaker’s son pulled the plug on the sequel, the former governor of California was livid, to say the least.

“Jason Reitman f**ked it up! Jason Reitman literally stopped the project when his father died. His father wanted to do it really badly. I wanted to do it really badly. Danny DeVito wanted to do it really badly. We had the financing. When his father passed away, Jason says, ‘I never liked the idea’ and put a hold on it.”

Twins is available for streaming on Netflix.
