When Ray and Charlie are crammed in a phone booth, Ray farts while on the phone while Charlie (played by Tom Cruise) asks shockingly if he farted or not. In an interview, Cruise revealed that during the scene, Dustin Hoffman really let one fart! Cruise was left disgusted by the behaviour and whatever his character said in the scene was actually what Tom Cruise meant yet he stayed in character.

“I tried to get out of the booth, and everything I said to him was real.”

As for Hoffman, the actor proudly boasted about the scene and stated that even though he has done Shakespearean dramas, nothing would compare to the fart scene that he ended up doing in Rain Man.

“And it’s one of the high moments of my life. I have done Shakespeare, and I have done plays by Arthur Miller, but nothing can touch the fart scene.”

This wasn’t the only unprofessional behavior of Dustin Hoffman that Hollywood tolerated. As per the reports, the actor slapped Meryl Streep during her first day of shooting for a scene!

On the sets of the 1979 film titled Kramer vs. Kramer, Meryl Streep had a terrible first day when Dustin Hoffman slapped her for real. Recalling the incident Meryl Streep stated that Hoffman took it too far.

“This is tricky because when you’re an actor, you’re in a scene, you have to feel free. I’m sure that I have inadvertently hurt people in physical scenes. But there’s a certain amount of forgiveness in that. But this was my first movie, and it was my first take in my first movie, and he just slapped me. And you see it in the movie.”

With many more controversies to his name, the duo of Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman can be seen in the 1988 movie. Rain Man is available to stream on Paramount+.
