The ultimate power couple of Hollywood ended their long-term relationship in 2016 after Angelina Jolie filed for divorce just two years after marrying Brad Pitt. The separation was a messy one and although the two are legally single, the divorce is yet to be finalized due to custody agreements.
Similar to their divorce, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s wedding also took a backseat despite the two being in a relationship for almost a decade. Why? Well, Brad Pitt had made an oath to not tie the knot with Angelina Jolie until gay marriage became completely legal in the country. While it was a thoughtful gesture, the couple failed to uphold their promise.

Brad Pitt on Delaying His Wedding with Angelina Jolie
Speaking to Parade back in 2009, Brad Pitt opened up about what the holdback was when it came to marrying Angelina Jolie. After all, the couple had been together for quite a few years then. Pitt stated that he and Jolie will make things official only when the entire United States of America would legalize gay marriages. While his statement got him a ton of backlash, he didn’t seem to care.
“I have love in my life, a soul mate – absolutely. When someone asked me why Angie and I don’t get married, I replied, ‘Maybe we’ll get married when it’s legal for everyone else.’ I stand by that, although I took a lot of flak for saying it – hate mail from religious groups. I believe everyone should have the same rights.”
This was a bold move given the fact that Massachusetts was the only state in the country to have legally recognized same-sex marriages. Unfortunately, Pitt couldn’t stay true to his promise and ended up tying the knot with Jolie one year before gay marriage became legal across the country.
What Changed Brad Pitt’s Mind?
Three years after Pitt had made the above-mentioned comments, something seemed to have changed his entire POV when it came to marrying Jolie. Talking to The Hollywood Reporter in 2012, the Fight Club actor stated that they might not be able to stand on the promise as their marriage meant a lot to their kids.
“We’d actually like to [get married] and it seems to mean more and more to our kids. We made this declaration some time ago that we weren’t going to do it till everyone can. But I don’t think we’ll be able to hold out. It means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot. And it means something to me too to make that kind of commitment.”
Pitt then opened up to Access Hollywood about the above comments clarifying,
“Why did I say that? There’s an issue of equality in marriage and we wanted to hold out until everyone had the right. I was just commenting on, one, it’s really difficult [to wait] when you love someone and two, that we are getting a lot of heat from the kids.”
Jolie and Pitt got engaged in 2012 and two years later, in 2014, the couple finally tied the knot. Fast forward to the next year and America had finally legalized same-s*x marriages in all fifty states of the country in a gigantic win.
