No matter what Timothée Chalamet has been up to these days, it can hardly be conceived as anything less than spectacular. The young actor who has more often than not been relegated to the term: a walking Renaissance oil painting, has taken pleasure in creating such equally artistic creations on the screen.
Over the past few years, these creations have evolved from minute roles in Homeland to Chalamet being Greta Gerwig’s leading man and the third youngest Best Actor nominee of all time at the Academy Awards since 1931 when Jackie Cooper took home the Oscar statuette for Skippy.
Timothée Chalamet Paves a Path Devoid of Marvel and DC
It is difficult to navigate past the treacherous paths of modern Hollywood without stumbling upon a comic book/superhero production, even if by mistake. The purely CBM-engrossed industry of today has not been without its fair share of ups and downs, but the formulaic narratives and plot devices that have proven so unfailingly successful have lured in most of Hollywood’s big shots and A-listers without much difficulty, including the ever-selective Harrison Ford, the notoriously private Bill Murray, and Brad Pitt. However, a few have escaped its iron-grip clutches and purposefully so.
Among the escaped convicts lies the young and effervescent rapper and fashion icon, Timothée Chalamet, who cannonballed his way into Hollywood with films like Call Me By Your Name, Little Women, The King, and Dune. His impossible-to-ignore stardom that has only ever been on the rise then demands him to make an appearance in the royal franchises of the era (by today’s standards), aka Marvel and DC. And he had almost made it too, only to lose out to his British counterpart, Tom Holland for the Spider-Man role.
“I read twice, and I left sweating in a total panic. I called my agent, [UTA’s] Brian Swardstrom, and I said, ‘Brian, I thought about this a lot, and I have to go back and knock on that door and read again.’ He told me the story of Sean Young and how in an attempt to become Catwoman she had scared everyone away when she showed up at the studio gates in costume.”
Today, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man franchise which currently has three standalone films in the bag has acquired almost $3.92 billion in its worldwide box office collection.
Timothée Chalamet: A Star Born in the Mold of Leo DiCaprio
One of the biggest stars of today, Leonardo DiCaprio headed into Hollywood with an ingrained and inherent understanding of what the industry demands of its partisans. Notorious in his youth and reserved in his veteran years, DiCaprio arrived at a time that witnessed the rise of Martin Scorsese among the new, young, and popular crowd. In that, DiCaprio needed Scorsese just as much as Scorsese needed DiCaprio. Together, they reshaped the industry with some of the best productions – dramas, biographies, and thrillers.
It goes without saying that the influence that the Titanic star has over the young up-and-comers of the coming era of Hollywood stars is unparalleled. Where Tom Cruise remains loud and boisterous in his box office blockbusters, DiCaprio causes ripples in the water that lasts long and reaches far to impress upon the next century of cinema lovers. In his footsteps, Timothée Chalamet grows and evolves with an understanding of what it means to be an actual movie star and not just an action hero with superpowers in an already saturated genre.
Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming film, Dune: Part Two premieres on 3 November 2023.
