Secret Invasion has been taking the Internet by storm, with many calling the show a comeback for the Marvel Cinematic Universe after a few years of mediocre projects. The show has an incredibly cast, with core MCU actors like Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, and Don Cheadle coming back to reprise their iconic roles, as well as new actors joining the MCU like Olivia Colman and Emilia Clarke.
The show’s storyline is even more interesting than its cast, with shapeshifting aliens, or Skrulls as their main antagonists. Having this type of villain, audiences were quick to start speculating which character would be revealed to be Skrull. Episode 4 of the series did exactly this, revealing James Rhodes, or War Machine, as being one of the green aliens.
Director Ali Selim The Exact Moment The Rhodes Was Replaced With A Skrull
After Don Cheadle’s character was revealed to be a Skrull, fans had many questions as to when one of the oldest characters in the MCU was replaced. The director of Secret Invasion, Ali Selim, talked about this, stating that it would be a lot of fun for the fans to look back and try to figure out the exact movie in which this exchange took place.
“I think that it’s gonna be a lot of fun for fans to unpack as they revisit all the Rhodey moments since the ‘Captain America’ moment when he was in the hospital, and to see how they feel about it.” He went on, “I don’t know if I wanna say it’s definitive or not definitive, but I think Rhodey has been a Skrull a lot longer than we suspected.”
He then went on to talk about the last time that the audiences truly show Rhodey and not a Skrull would have to be in Captain America: Civil War. He explained this by stating that we see him in a hospital gown at the end of episode six of the series and his leg is not working, which was the result of an accident that took place at the end of the third Captain America movie.
“I think his legs not working in the end of episode six and him being in the hospital gown points to [Captain America: Civil War]. And, from there, does it have to be definitive, or is it more fun for the audience to go back and revisit every moment, every Rhodey moment and look at it with a different lens now that they think, ‘Oh, he might’ve been a Skrull there.’ And make the decision for themselves, or it’ll be answered in Armor Wars.” he stated.
Selim went on to say that this evidence could point to the fact that he was replaced when he was in the hospital near the end of Captain America: Civil War, however, fans will only find out what happens when they watch Armor Wars, a move which is set to star Don Cheadle as Rhodey again.
Fans Are Not Happy With This New Reveal About Rhodey
As soon as this news hit Twitter, fans were quick to share their opinions and thoughts on the subject and they were not happy. The majority of the fans were extremely angry at this reveal, stating this completely ruins Iron Man’s legacy as they soon realized that Tony Stark did not have his best friend by his side when he died and James Rhodes does not know that his best friend is dead.
“Someone tell this man the actual definition of fun because he has a warped version of it.” stated a fan.
They were also upset that they erased any character development that he had in Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War with characters like Nebula. They also added that this sudden plot twist made absolutely no sense and felt more like sloppy, bad writing, rather than something planned out and then executed.
