Johnny Depp hasn’t been part of any substantial projects in the film industry since being accused by Amber Heard of being abusive towards her back in 2018. But the upcoming French biographical drama, Jeanne du Barry will finally mark the Pirates of the Caribbean actor’s first big appearance after the controversy.
With the upcoming movie set to mark its premiere in 2023’s Cannes Film Festival, its chief, Thierry Frémaux was asked about the controversial move following the actor’s tumultuous past. However, the director went on to brush off the debate, as he shared his support for the actor.
Thierry Fremaux brushes off the controversy surrounding the actor
During an interview with Variety, Thierry Frémaux was asked about the controversial decision of opening the 2023’s event with Johnny Depp’s Jeanne du Barry. However, the director Thierry didn’t back away from taking a stand for the movie and the actor, as he went on to share his viewpoint regarding the situation. The director further refused to see the situation as controversial and explained his reasoning by stating,
“I don’t see Maiwenn’s film as a controversial choice at all, because if Johnny Depp had been banned from working it would have been different, but that’s not the case. We only know one thing, it’s the justice system and I think he won the legal case. But the movie isn’t about Johnny Depp.”
And with the movie inching toward its release, it is also being reported that the lead star too is excited about the ambitious project. It will be Depp’s first major appearance in a movie since 2018.
Johnny Depp is excited about his first major release since 2018
Following his first big screen appearance after winning the defamation trial against his ex-wife, it seems that Johnny Depp is excited to go back to his roots with the upcoming movie. The upcoming historical drama will witness Depp in the role of King Louis XV, who will be starring opposite actress and filmmaker Maiwenn. According to an insider, ever since the end of the trial, the Edward Scissorhands actor has been deeply invested in the project. The insider further added,
“Filming was challenging, but Johnny is excited about the comeback. He thinks it’s perfect that this historical drama will open at Cannes.”
The last few years have been extremely rough on both the actor’s personal and professional career. Fans will hope that the upcoming French drama will bring the actor’s career back on track. And bearing in mind that the movie is set to kick off the event, it is reasonable to assume that it will not fail to live up to deliver on this major occasion.
Jeanne du Barry will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 16.
