Brian Cox is a widely successful actor who has appeared in many massive projects like the Bourne Identity franchise, Manhunter, Tory, and being in the massive hit television series, Succession. Cox recently appeared on an episode of Variety’s Actors on Actors alongside Emily Blunt. Blunt is known for her work in A Quiet Place, Mary Poppins, and Jungle Cruise.
Here, Cox revealed how he feels about the Oscar-winning, Hollywood legend, Meryl Streep, and what went down when the two met for the first time.
Does Brian Cox Dislike Meryl Streep?
Emily Blunt’s breakout performance was the 2006 movie, The Devil Wears Prada, where she starred alongside Anne Hatheway and Meryl Streep herself. During this interview, a question about this movie came up, to which Brian Cox recalled an interaction he had with Streep. He started the conversation by telling the actress that he did not like her.
“I met her once, and I said, ‘I never liked you.’ And she went, ‘What?'” Cox recalled to Blunt. “I said, ‘I never liked you because I was jealous.’ How can anybody be that good?”
He even revealed that he loved the movie, The Devil Wears Prada when asked about it, “I loved it.”
“And to work with one of the greatest screen actresses of all time, I so envy you. One of my ambitions, before I snuff it, is to work with Meryl.”
At her confusion about the statement, he elaborated that he was envious of her work and was in awe of her acting capabilities. He continued, stating that he would really like to share the screen with her someday. He envies Blunt for getting to do what he and many other actors still only dream of.
The two appeared in the 2002 movie, Adaptation, but did not end up sharing the screen together.
What Does Brian Cox Think About Method Acting And Meryl Streep Being Terrifying On Set Because of It?
Emily Blunt went on to talk about her experience on the set of The Devil Wears Prada. She mentioned that during the filming of this movie, Meryl Streep was trying method acting for the first time. This made her quite a nightmare on set due to her character. Blunt then mentioned how awful the experience was for Streep herself and how miserable she was throughout. This made Brian Cox share his opinions about method acting.
“There’s this whole debate about Method acting and all that,” Cox said. “I’m all for whatever gets you through the day. But the great thing is how you transmit energy. If you hit it right, it just works. That’s the most important thing that we have as actors, that ability to go into something very quickly and come out of it. Not to dwell.”
He stated that everyone has their own process and can do what they need to to get into character. He went on to say method acting is good to get into character as long as you are able to come in and out of it. He said that one of the good things about acting is the ability to turn the character on and off.
