Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt’s Passengers had all the makings of a smash hit. A huge budget, an impressive cast, and a compelling premise should have ensured a smashing success, but the film bombed instead.

Passengers was a commercial success but was criticized harshly and became a critical flop. The film’s transition from an exciting science fiction adventure to a romantic storyline was a major misstep.

This change caused some controversy, as Pratt’s character went from being a likable guy to a morally questionable protagonist, and the film was accused of trying to romanticize Stockholm Syndrome.

Passengers center on a spaceship that takes five thousand people to a new colony. It is planned that the passengers will sleep for 120 years until the spaceship is very close to its destination. However, Pratt’s character, Jim, is roused from hibernation too soon after an asteroid collision damages one of the pods.

After being on his own for a year, Jim develops feelings for Lawrence’s character, Aurora, and makes the problematic and ethically troubling decision to wake her up without her consent. The plot’s believability was also questioned because it seemed unrealistic for the characters to be unprepared for the potential dangers of space travel.

Unfortunately, even the best acting in the world couldn’t save Passengers because it missed opportunities to explore these ethical dilemmas and didn’t have a strong enough story.

Jennifer Lawrence’s Regrets and Adele’s Warning

Jennifer Lawrence’s team believed that the success of the film Passengers would lead to even greater success for Lawrence in the future. However, one of her closest confidantes forewarned her about the challenges of making a film set in space.

Adele, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, was that friend. Adele’s wise counsel warned Lawrence about the glut of space movies in Hollywood, making an analogy to the previous fad of vampire films.

“Adele told me not to do it! She was like, ‘I feel like space movies are the new vampire movies.’ I should have listened to her.”

The actress now realizes how wise Adele’s words were and feels bad that she didn’t take them to heart sooner. Jennifer Lawrence’s performance in Passengers was a watershed moment that made her reevaluate her career choices.

However, Lawrence ultimately found that she was happiest when she could delve deeply into her craft in smaller, more personal projects. She was tired of the spotlight and wanted to return to acting and telling stories again.

Lawrence’s renewed enthusiasm for her work can be attributed to her recent shift toward lower-budget features. Her recent work reflects her dedication to storytelling and character-focused narratives, as seen in the Apple TV+ film Causeway.

The actress’s renewed passion for acting and ability to make choices that reflect her artistic vision can be attributed to her decision to focus on high-quality scripts and substantial roles.
