“I’m not interested. I refuse. I just can’t do it… The amount of lore, Easter eggs, and fan service starts to become antithetical to any of this stuff at a certain point. It isn’t storytelling anymore. It’s large-scale advertising.”
However, producer Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, said that it is “entirely possible” that a Helena Shaw spinoff could happen sometime in the near future. As for Mangold, he said that the film will be a “hero at sunset” story, focusing on Harrison Ford’s character as he ages. In an interview with Empire, Mangold said that he wanted to address the character’s age head-on since Ford turned 80 this year. He said,
“It became really important to me to figure out how to make this a movie about a hero at sunset. A hero who’s not quite as young as he used to be, but still has that same spark, that same adventurous spirit.”
Mangold said that the film will be a “love letter” to the Indiana Jones franchise, but that it will also be a “new chapter” in the character’s story. He added,
“We wanted to make a film that honors the legacy of the franchise, but also feels fresh and exciting. We wanted to make a film that Indiana Jones fans will love, but that also appeals to a new generation of viewers.”
