Greta Gerwig’s Barbie became a revolutionary movie after its release in 2023. Having numerous cameos throughout the movie, Timothée Chalamet was also considered to give a cameo in the Ryan Gosling starrer.
Well, due to unfortunate circumstances, Chalamet couldn’t appear in the role which led to Greta Gerwig comparing herself to Chalamet’s mother. Feeling like a mother creating a movie without her children, the director lamented that Timothée Chalamet couldn’t join Barbie.
Greta Gerwig Felt Bereft of Her Children While Making Barbie
Having created several movies together, director Greta Gerwig and Timothée Chalamet have made a great bond over their years in Hollywood. Starring in Gerwig’s 2017 movie titled Lady Bird, the director wanted Timothée Chalamet to make a cameo in her magnum opus that is Barbie.
The chance to portray the role of one of the Kens was offered to the Call Me by Your Name actor but he had scheduling conflicts in his way. The actor even appeared on the sets of Barbie in London to meet the director but he couldn’t work on the project. Alongside Chalamet, Saoirse Ronan was also in talks for a cameo but she too was busy with her personal project. In an interview, the director revealed how she felt creating the movie without Timothée Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan.
“I tried to get them both in it. They [Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan] both couldn’t do it. I know! Why aren’t you in this?”
Chalemet resonated with these words and regretted that he wasn’t a part of the movie by saying “I should have been in this”. Gerwig gave an analogy wherein she compared herself to their mother.
“It felt like doing something without my children. I mean, I’m not their mom, but I sort of feel like their mom.“
Timothée Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan’s cameo would have benefitted the movie greatly but it’s not like Greta Gerwig needed them to create history.
