Tom Holland Almost Lost His Spider-Man Role

Marvel has been successfully launching its comic book characters into life, over several decades. And surprisingly, Spider-Man’s character from the comics has been the most sought-after role in live-action movies. While several legendary Hollywood actors have tried their hands on the role, only a few made it to the silver screen.

After being introduced in 1962, it took 40 years for the character to get the Hollywood treatment as Sam Raimi first brought his Spider-Man movie featuring Toby McGuire, in 2002. Following Raimi’s footsteps, many acclaimed filmmakers came up with their version of Spider-Man, until Jon Watts brought Tom Holland to steal the screen with his enchanting performance.

Although Tom Holland mesmerized his audience with his screen presence and even got deemed as the ultimate portrayal of the young school-going MCU superhero, he nearly lost his role to an Oscar nominee. And while it’s being said, the Spider-Man movie wasn’t just a big budget opportunity for Holland, it was also where he met Zendaya.

I called my agent, [UTA’s] Brian Swardstrom, and I said, ‘Brian, I thought about this a lot and I have to go back and knock on that door and read again,’” Timothée Chalamet shared.
