Almost everyone knows about Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s relationship, thanks to the infamous Oscars slap. Smith went up to the stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards in March 2022 because Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.
However, their relationship was in the spotlight for all the bad reasons too. In 2020, Jada Pinkett Smith admitted that she had an affair. Smith, on the other hand, has always valued his relationship with his wife. He once refused to kiss his Seven Pounds (2008) co-star Rosario Dawson because he thought it was cheating.
Will Smith didn’t want to kiss Rosario Dawson
Rosario Dawson and Will Smith worked together in Gabriele Muccino’s 2008 movie, Seven Pounds. The two were supposed to film a kissing scene, however, Smith kept procrastinating it. In an interview with Access Hollywood, Dawson explained,
“Here is the guy who was pushing our kiss to like the end and the end and the end of the schedule. So the point was like, ‘OK, I know I don’t smell bad… I know I brushed my teeth…I did the deodorant!'”
Will Smith has explained in the past that he is not a huge fan of getting intimate with his female co-stars.
Jada Pinkett Smith showed up on the set
Rosario Dawson further revealed that Will Smith wanted his wife to be on the set while he films the scene. Dawson said,
“You are just nervous. You’re nervous about kissing me. Don’t worry baby, I’ll be gentle. He wanted Jada to be on set. And she was letting him know, ‘Baby you really need to bring it! Don’t embarrass me.’ So, she was on my side on this one. There was lots of tongue. I mean, I got permission from Jada, I got permission from Jada!”
In 2020, in an episode of Red Table Talk, Jada Pinkett Smith revealed that she had an affair with August Alsina while she was married to Will Smith because the two were going through a rough patch.
Will Smith then defended himself
During the same interview with Hollywood Access, Smith explained his side of the story and what goes on his mind when he has to film an intimate scene with a co-star,
“That’s a lie. All right, that’s a little bit true. I like being respectful… [The scene was] a lot like being in a bed and she is naked and you don’t want to accidentally… you know. I wasn’t scared. I was trying to be respectful. I told Jada, ‘I feel a little uncomfortable,’ and she was like, ‘Boy, listen!’ She was like, ‘Don’t you embarrass me! You better get on that screen and show them what you are working with!”
The actor always makes sure that his female co-stars are comfortable before filming intimate scenes with them.
