Renowned actors Matt Damon and Emily Blunt are set to grace the silver screen together once again in the highly anticipated film Oppenheimer. In a recent interview with Access Hollywood, the A-listers discussed their excitement for the project, praising director Christopher Nolan’s vision and co-star Cillian Murphy’s performance as the title scientist, J. Robert Oppenheimer, known for his involvement in the development of the atomic bomb.
Beyond their on-screen collaboration, Damon and Blunt have developed a close friendship over the years, stemming from their previous partnership in the 2011 $127 million grossing film The Adjustment Bureau, where they portrayed love interests.
Emily Blunt recalled the time when she was hell-bent on impressing Matt Damon
Matt Damon and Emily Blunt fondly recalled their initial meeting at The Adjustment Bureau, with Blunt expressing her gratitude for Damon’s kindness during her audition. Blunt revealed that she was aware that a few other actresses have already auditioned for the role, and hence she had to impress Damon. She said,
“He was so nice to me, I auditioned for it. And I know he’d seen like four other chicks that day and he was so lovely and fun and we [improvised] a lot and it was really cool.”
Furthermore, Damon also reminisced about the impressive audition Blunt delivered, emphasizing that she stood out among other talented candidates and ultimately became the reason he decided to be a part of the film. He said, “You just came in and slaughtered the audition. You did, you crushed. They were all excellent, but you were just definitely the reason to make the movie.”
Although a sequel to The Adjustment Bureau seemed like a remote possibility, the actors playfully entertained the idea during the interview. Blunt even offered a humorous twist for the hypothetical follow-up, suggesting a role reversal where she would wear the fedora while Damon takes on a dancing persona.
How did the actors’ off-screen relationship make Christopher Nolan reconsider his casting decision
Emily Blunt and Matt Damon revealed that they are now neighbors and even go on double dates with their respective spouses “all the time.” Interestingly, their proximity played a role in the casting process of Oppenheimer.
Both actors recounted an amusing incident where Christopher Nolan hesitated to discuss the film with each of them on the same day, concerned that it might seem like a convenient choice due to their off-screen connection. Damon shared how the director bumped into Blunt’s husband, John Krasinski, in the lobby while intending to approach Blunt about the project, prompting Nolan to be cautious about his approach.
Oppenheimer, directed by Nolan, is scheduled to hit theaters on July 21, and fans eagerly await the on-screen chemistry between Damon and Blunt once again. As the talented duo reunites, their off-screen friendship adds an extra layer of anticipation to this upcoming cinematic experience.
