Director Greta Gerwig’s latest movie, Barbie, has managed to become a worldwide sensation. Crossing the $1 billion mark at the global box office, the movie was praised for acknowledging many social issues in society. The film received positive reviews from everyone except one specific fanbase.
There is a joke in Gerwig’s movie that takes a cheeky dig at director Zack Snyder and his Snyderverse. The joke, which was made by actress Alexandria Shipp’s character in the movie, was not well received by the fans of Snyderverse. Gerwig later explained that the joke makes sense as the character had a vague knowledge about the Snyderverse.
A joke in Barbie offended Zack Snyder’s fans
Director Greta Gerwig‘s Barbie contains a lot of jokes referencing many iconic movies including The Godfather. While all these jokes were light-hearted, one specific joke offended director Zack Snyder‘s fans. At one point in the movie, actress Alexandria Shipp’s character says,
“It’s like I’ve been in a dream where I was really invested in the Zack Snyder cut of Justice League.”
It was a subtle dig at the fans of Snyderverse. The fanbase is well-known for defending Snyder’s DC movies that were set in a timeline known as the Snyderverse.
Greta Gerwig talked about the joke
After the backlash from Snyderverse fans, Gerwig explained why adding the joke made sense in the movie. In an interview with ComicBook, Gerwig said,
“I didn’t even really realize that, I didn’t even – Because I don’t have a dog in this fight, I didn’t even really know, I knew it was a thing. I don’t know the contours of all the ins and outs.”
Gerwig added that Alexandria Shipp’s Barbie “had a vague knowledge of it, and then all of a sudden in a certain state, it really meant a lot to her, and then it went away.” The joke was a harmless reference that didn’t seem to attack Zack Snyder’s legacy.
Barbie managed to beat Oppenheimer at the global box office
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Gerwig’s Barbie were released on the same day, making it an exciting day for all cinephiles. Thanks to its marketing, Barbie has managed to break several records. Earning roughly $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office, it is now the second highest-grossing release in the history of Warner Bros.
On the other hand, Nolan’s cinematic masterpiece has managed to cross $650 million at the global box office, which is quite impressive as well. It is now the highest-grossing World War II film in the history of Hollywood.
