Zack Snyder Refused to Set Rebel Moon in $51.8B Star Wars Franchise Because of His One Demand That Disney Would Never Grant

Zack Snyder’s films, such as those in the DCEU, are known for their audacity and visual splendor. Nonetheless, Snyder had a chance to enter the legendary Star Wars universe before he got involved with superheroes.

In an interview with Empire magazine, Snyder said that his upcoming film, Rebel Moon, was originally intended to be a Star Wars film. Zack Snyder’s one requirement made it impossible to work within the framework of the established franchise, despite widespread interest in the idea. So, the story of Rebel Moon expanded into a multi-part original science fiction epic.

Akira Kurosawa’s body of work heavily influenced Snyder’s original concept for a Star Wars film. He wanted to write a story like Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai, only in space. Snyder thought it would be interesting to make a Star Wars film that explicitly acknowledged George Lucas’s debt to Akira Kurosawa’s works, calling it “a big ask.” But that was only the start of the difficulties that lay ahead.

“I knew it was a big ask, to be honest. But the deeper I got into it, I realised it was probably never going to be what I wanted.”

During post-production on Man of Steel, Zack Snyder approached Lucasfilm with his idea for a Star Wars film. The sale of Lucasfilm to Disney had just closed, creating exciting new opportunities for the long-running series.

Snyder viewed this as a way to maintain his artistic independence while pursuing his vision within the Star Wars canon. The producer proposed a darker, R-rated tone and stated his desire to work on his own story apart from existing characters, which was met with significant resistance.

“The sale [of Lucasfilm to Disney] had just happened. There was that window where, you know, who knows what’s possible? I was like, ‘I don’t want any of your characters. I don’t want to do anything with any known characters, I just want to do my own thing on the side.’ And originally I was like, ‘It should be rated R!’ That was almost a non-starter.”

The biggest challenge was meeting Snyder’s one requirement that Rebel Moon be a self-contained story that doesn’t involve any of the canon Star Wars characters. While his ideas were consistent with those that informed the first Star Wars movies, they did not follow canon.

Further, Disney’s family-friendly approach to the franchise was at odds with Snyder’s preference for an R-rated film. Zack Snyder’s idea couldn’t fit into the $51.8 billion Star Wars franchise for the reasons stated.

To appeal to a larger audience, the first release of Rebel Moon will be on Netflix with some parental guidance removed. Still, Zack Snyder hasn’t abandoned his plan to make an R movie. He plans to release the film for those who want a more mature and intense viewing experience.

Zack Snyder finally got the independence to go in the direction he wanted with his science fiction epic Rebel Moon. With Rebel Moon, Snyder finally realized his dream of bringing his original vision to the big screen, ushering in a new era in his filmmaking career.
