Denis Villeneuve’s Dune was a success with Timothée Chalamet and everyone else who was involved in the movie also gaining further recognition. However, a movie that did not get as much recognition and got an exact opposite response of what Villeneuve would have liked was Blade Runner 2049. The director revealed during the press tour for Dune how the Blade Runner sequel was not the best decision he made.
The director revealed that he was already aware of the risk he was taking while filming the movie and how it was a step into his career’s grave. He admitted that he was surprised that his career is still intact regardless of the mistakes he made by filming and releasing Blade Runner 2049.
Denis Villeneuve Knew Blade Runner 2049 Could Be The End Of His Career
Denis Villeneuve knew that making Blade Runner 2049 could very well be career suicide for him. He was aware of the fact that it could be easily considered an artistic crime and yet he went forward with the idea and made the movie anyways. He admitted to thinking of it as a miracle that his career was still an ongoing success even after the movie’s conflicting reviews.
“Just the fact that I’m still here making movies, for me…at least I wasn’t banned from the filmmaker community. It was a dangerous game.”
He stated that he was surprised as to how he still was able to direct and film movies without any consequences after he made the sequel. The movie ended up making less than half of what the original budget had been. The box office revenue for Blade Runner 2049 had been of mere $100 Million while the total budget had been around $300 Million. The movie though is still regarded by those who liked it, saying that the pacing was perfect. Unfortunately, the box office could not make up the revenue that the fans’ responses would make one believe.
Denis Villeneuve Went Into Create Dune
Even after the doubt that Denis Villeneuve had about Blade Runner 2049, the director still managed to bring Frank Herbert’s novels to life. Dune brought to life Paul and Chani’s stories with Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, alongside a massive cast including Oscar Isaac, Dave Bautista, and many others. The movie gained massive success and its sequel is about to be released as well.
The director did not expect to stand and promote his movie let alone be able to continue his career. Now the sequel to another successful movie is underway.
Dune: Part 2 will be available to watch in theatres from 3rd November 2023.
