“I just wish I’d called him”: Tom Holland Felt Horrible for Stealing Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man Role After Fearing Marvel Would Fire Him for His Own Insecurities

Tom Holland Felt Horrible for Stealing Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man Role After Fearing Marvel Would Fire Him for His Own Insecurities

Andrew Garfield took over the role of the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man from Tobey Maguire in the 2012 film, The Amazing Spider-Man. Unfortunately, his tenure was met with disheartening reviews from critics and he was soon replaced by Tom Holland’s Spider-Man after just a sequel.

While Tom Holland’s superhero was welcomed with open arms and positive reviews, something was troubling him at the back of his mind. The actor had some major regrets about his takeover and he recently opened up about how he believes he could have handled the recasting with much more grace. Blaming it on his naive young self, Tom Holland regrets not calling Andrew Garfield and having an open and honest conversation with him.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) has a generous score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. On the other hand, Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2 scored 71% and 51% respectively. Clearly, Holland’s film was much more appreciated by the audience.

Despite the success, Holland was disappointed in himself because of the way he handled the situation. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter about his new TV series, The Crowded Room, Holland opened up about his regret and how he wishes he had taken the liberty to ring Garfield’s cell phone.

“That’s because of my naivete as a kid. I was 19 when I got cast. I was so caught up in getting the role that I never took any time to think about what it must have been like for him. If I’d made my second movie and it didn’t necessarily deliver in the way it should have done and they recast me, I would really struggle to bounce back. Andrew bounced back in the most unbelievable way. I just wish I’d called him and just said, ‘You know I can’t turn down this opportunity.’“

Putting himself in Garfield’s shoes made Holland feel empathy toward the actor whose run as Spider-Man was cut short. While he wishes he could have done it right the first time around, it’s better late than never, right?

Holland’s disappointment in himself came to a rest when he finally got to collaborate with Garfield and Tobey Maguire for the box-office-shattering, Spider-Man: No Way Home. Not only did the film result in one of the biggest team-ups of all time and a hilarious meme recreation, but it also gave Holland a much-needed closure.

Holland revealed that the film resulted in the three Spider-Men developing an unbreakable bond and that they even have a group chat.

“Myself, Andrew, Tobey — we have this amazing bond as three people who have been through something that is so unique that we really are like brothers. We have a great group chat and we catch up every now and then. It’s called the Spider-Boys.”

Holland also gave a quick look into the group chat where he asked his fellow Spider-Boys to sign a poster for a charity auction, to which they happily obliged. It’s truly incredible seeing the three Spider-Men get along with each other off-screen. Now that’s what we call the multiverse of madness!
