Zendaya has made a name as one of the most popular modern stars in Hollywood in a very short time. The actor who originally started her career as a model, singer, and dancer, got her first acting gig in Spiderman: Homecoming, in which she played the character of Peter Parker aka Spiderman’s girlfriend Mary-Jane Watson. Her performance in the film was a stepping stone to other big commercial projects like The Greatest Showman and Dune.
Her biggest recognition came in 2019 when the actor was cast in the teenage drama series Euphoria, in which she played a recovering drug addict who struggles to integrate herself into society. This performance won her the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama series. Seasons 1 and 2 of Euphoria went on to become a huge success with a 3rd Season having been confirmed by the creators. In a recent interview, Zendaya sat down with her co-stars Sydney Sweeney, Hunter Schafer, and Maude Apatow, to talk about the hit show and her hopes for her character, Rue.
Zendaya Expressed Her Thoughts On Euphoria
In a Q and A session outside Paramount theater, actor Zendaya spoke candidly about her hit web series Euphoria and her experiences with playing a complex teenage drug addict. According to the Dune star, a lot of rewriting happened for Season 2 as the writers went back and forth within the script to create a perfect finale that would do justice to the character arcs. Talking about the influence of the pandemic, Zendaya said,
“There was a much sadder ending to this season, and so we were thinking, We can’t leave her here, she means too much to us. I think, collectively, as a people, we all needed a little bit of hope. We needed something to look forward to, some goodness and some joy, and trying to find that in a very painful time”.
The singer-actor added that she longed for the audience to see the internal beauty of her character that would ultimately shine through despite her various complexities. She praised the directors, the writers, and her co-actors for creating the perfect finale for Season 2.
Zendaya discussed her hopes for her character in Season 3
Speaking of Euphoria and her experiences filming the web series, Zendaya spoke about the influence her character Rue has had on people. Talking of creator Sam Levinson and his struggles with drugs that led to the creation of the storyline, Zendaya said,
“He’s proof that there is hope for Rue and anyone like Rue, and from the beautiful letters and people who have reached out — I am so grateful for those experiences when somebody comes up to me, and they speak about Rue and how they’ve connected to her or whatever part of their healing journey she has been able to be a part of”.
The Spiderman: Homecoming actor also discussed her dreams for the character going into Season 3. Hoping for a brighter horizon and a life of happiness for Rue, she said,
“I just hope for a little bit of joy and for her just to be able to breathe and love without the fear of losing. I mean she’s gonna have to go through some things, yes, but you know, we’ll get there.”
Zendaya is expected to commence filming Season 3 of Euphoria during the latter half of 2023 which means that it might be at least the middle of 2024 before we get to see the web series air its new season.
