After Guillermo del Toro departed from the IP, Hellboy was lost into obscurity, and the previous attempt of relaunching the IP on big screens mostly backfired. But it seems that Millennium Media is adamant about bringing back the Dark Horse character into relevancy through the upcoming reboot.
Although Guillermo del Toro will not return to direct the project, the Mom and Dad director Brian Taylor has been attached to the upcoming reboot. And the director has promised the fans that the upcoming reboot will be more faithful to the source material than its predecessors.
Brian Taylor assures that the new Hellboy movie will be faithful to the comics
The upcoming reboot of the Dark Horse character will have Brian Taylor as its director, and it appears that he is determined to deliver an authentic version of Hellboy. Although he went on to appreciate Del Toro’s approach to the character, the director stated that Del Toro’s take on the character was more of its own thing and his upcoming iteration is going to change that and will be more true to the comics. He stated,
“The GDT movies were massive-scale space operas and just pure Del Toro through and through. But some of the comics Mike (Mignola) was doing at the time had a very different feeling. For me, it’s my favorite version of the character. So the appeal of this one to me is to go back to that and do a real reset, and give us that version of Hellboy, which I just don’t think we’ve seen yet.”
The director also confirmed that the movie will be rated R to allow the gritty violence and deliver a faithful experience like the comics. But it appears the movie will also have a more younger and inexperienced Hellboy at its forefront.
The upcoming movie will comprise a much younger Hellboy
In contrast to its predecessors, where we witnessed a more seasoned and experience Hellboy, the upcoming rendition will comprise a young demon at its forefront. And like the movie’s title, the film will follow the lines of The Crooked Man book, where a younger version of the character wanders into the dark corners of the world. He stated,
“The Crooked Man in particular is just such an iconic book written by Mike, drawn by Richard Corben, another legend. Set in the late 50s. For me, it’s my favorite version of the character.”
Even though fans were hesitant after Guillermo del Toro was not attached to the project, many are now excited to see Taylor’s vision unfold in the upcoming movie. And even though fans will have to wait to witness whether the movie surpasses Del Toro’s classic, they’re hopeful after Taylor assured fans about delivering a faithful adaptation of the character.
No release date for Hellboy: The Crooked Man has been made official.
