“I just don’t think they had the gravitas”: James Bond Casting Director’s Justification For Rejecting Henry Cavill Is Why Tom Hardy’s Now The Perfect 007 Candidate

"I just don't think they had the gravitas": James Bond Casting Director's Justification For Rejecting Henry Cavill Is Why Tom Hardy's Now The Perfect 007 Candidate

The search for the next James Bond doesn’t seem to end. Ever since Daniel Craig was confirmed to leave the celebrated franchise, multiple names like Henry Cavill or Tom Hardy have been considered to don the mantle next, but nothing seems to be working out so far. It isn’t as if they are not ‘worthy’ candidates, but rather the ‘shoes’ are too big to be filled.

While fans have been vouching for a younger actor and a revised storyline, the James Bond casting director, Debbie McWilliams has other plans. Often she has revealed that the next 007 should only be played by an actor with more experience, maturity, and ‘gravitas’. Looking at her ‘requirements’, one can’t help but think Tom Hardy may be the perfect man for the job.

Playing James Bond is no small deal. The role has been popularized by popular culture and its nitty-gritty storyline. The character’s sophistication and appeal are enough for any actor to take on the role. However, landing the role is not an easy feat, since the casting director has very peculiar requirements and wants an actor who is older and more mature.

“We did look at a lot of younger actors, and I just don’t think they had the gravitas. They didn’t have the experience, they didn’t have the mental capacity to take it on, because it’s not just the part they’re taking on, it’s a massive responsibility.”

It was also revealed that they considered having a younger actor in the past as well, but it never worked out.

“We’ve tried looking at younger people in the past. But trying to visualise it doesn’t work.”

Among the many actors in line for the role, two stand out the most- Henry Cavill and Tom Hardy. And seeing the requirements, it is a no-brainer that Hardy would be the perfect to play the celebrated British spy instead of Henry Cavill.

Reasons Why Tom Hardy Would Be The Perfect James Bond

Both Tom Hardy and Henry Cavill are British actors with many accolades under their belt. While both have portrayed diverse roles in their career, Hardy has had much more experience when it comes to ‘gravitas and versatility’. Not only is he an impeccable actor, but his mature demeanor and versatility are perfect for portraying Bond’s multifaceted persona.

Having played multiple action roles, his rugged persona and nuanced performances can seamlessly transform him into the perfect Bond. Furthermore, his age, experience, and physical appearance are befitting for him to portray Bond, a character that is supposed to be a ‘veteran’.

On the other hand, while Henry Cavill might fit the shoes, his youthful appearance and lack of experience in comparison to Hardy’s could be a hindrance to the portrayal. Even though he is a tremendous actor, looking at the requirements Hardy would be a better choice to convincingly portray a character as diverse and captivating as James Bond.

The James Bond franchise can be streamed on Amazon Prime.
