Despite a career filled with Oscar-baiting roles and acting chops worthy of being inducted into the Hall of Fame, Emma Stone has faced her fair share of struggles over the years. The La La Land actress has never failed to brighten up the room with her presence and her performance and it has been her comedic timing that has gripped fans’ attention on screen in her diverse range of roles and parts in film and television. Yet, surprisingly, the actor has felt undermined and neglected on the creative floor enough to make her feel diminished about her craft.
Emma Stone Calls Out Hollywood’s Double Standards
The incredible skills and talent bound within the Oscar-winning actress, Emma Stone, have been a gift to the acting industry and for Hollywood to intentionally undermine her worth is a travesty and a tragedy. Stone’s career which has given us hilarious rom-coms, fan-favorite superhero movies, and an Oscar-worthy musical had begun to take off by the early to mid-Aughts. It wasn’t until 2007’s Superbad that she broke out in the industry and 2010s Easy A that she proved her worth as a leading lady in an acclaimed film.
The actress, however, tells a slightly different version of the incidents that don’t quite paint a nice picture when it comes to the functionality of Hollywood and productions from behind the scenes. In an interview with Rolling Stone, she claimed:
There are times in the past, making a movie, when I’ve been told that I’m hindering the process by bringing up an opinion or an idea. I hesitate to make it about being a woman. But there have been times when I’ve improvised, they’ve laughed at my joke and then given it to my male co-star. Given my joke away. Or it’s been me saying, ‘I really don’t think this line is gonna work,’ and being told, ‘Just say it, just say it, if it doesn’t work we’ll cut it out’ – and they didn’t cut it out, and it really didn’t work!
Tragically, throughout all of her roles, it’s the actress’ comedic chops that have always turned heads for hitting the perfect intonation and timing in every performance. One can imagine then what her roles would turn out to be like if she was allowed enough creative liberty to actually use her ingenue for her roles instead of shackling Stone’s raw and crackling talent.
Emma Stone Proves Hollywood Wrong, Rises To the Very Top
As an artist, more often than not, to be undermined for one’s work is just as harrowing and insulting as it is to be unrecognized in their own time. Emma Stone was simply refused by filmmakers and directors to be taken with importance or significance. The actress has time and again risen against all odds and starred in ensemble features only to hold her own against established actors like Stanley Tucci, Steve Carell, Woody Harrelson, and Emma Thompson. However, it took the industry an entire decade after her break-out role before recognizing her talent and worth in the industry.
In 2017, Stone won the Academy Award for Best Actress [La La Land] against such nominees as Meryl Streep and Natalie Portman and became the world’s highest-paid actress. She went on to win a BAFTA and a Golden Globe the same year for her role in the Ryan Gosling starring musical. Currently, the actress is gearing up for the premiere of Poor Things which stars Mark Ruffalo in the sci-fi fantasy film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.
Poor Things premieres on 8 September 2023.
