In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Winslet stated what DiCaprio once told her. “It’s really important that you are the shape that you are.” When she asked what he meant by what he said, he replied that many women believe that being skinny is the only way to achieve success, to be loved, and to be considered attractive.
He said ‘Because there’s so many skinny girls out there who think that to be successful and to be beautiful and therefore to be loved and respected, it means you have to be thin.’”
She told Winfrey that being nominated for an Academy Award for her role in Titanic helped her realize that she could be a successful actor without being skinny or starving herself.
“… so when the Academy Awards came around for Titanic, I thought ‘You know what? I’m young, I’m 21 years old and I’m in this movie and it’s very successful and I’ve been nominated for an Academy Award for this. And I haven’t done any of this through being skinny,’” Winslet said.
The actress feels that women are now less afraid to speak up because of how things have changed. Winslet thinks that growing older shouldn’t be viewed as a bad thing, and in order to support this viewpoint, she urged a cosmetics company to refrain from making changes to her images.
