After years of being nominated, Leonardo DiCaprio finally bagged an Oscar in 2016. Acting since the age of 15, it felt that an Academy Award for a talented actor like DiCaprio was long due. Despite the wait and anticipation, it was a worthwhile win, especially when you think about what the Titanic star had to endure to achieve such a feat.
It has been said a million times and we’ll say it again, being an actor is no easy job. For DiCaprio, this couldn’t be more true since the role that helped him bag the prestigious award involved him shooting in the coldest weather and eating a raw bison liver!
Leonardo DiCaprio Ate Raw Liver For His Oscar-Winning Role
As an actor, one is supposed to completely immerse themselves in the lives and experiences of their characters. If not, the whole experience seems shallow and superficial to the audience. If there is one thing that Leonardo DiCaprio is best at, he can completely become one with his characters, as if it were a natural ability for him. Whether it is Arnie Grape in Whats Eating Gilbert Grape, or Danny Archer in Blood Diamond, DiCaprio is a master in acting.
To ace his role in one of his most awe-inspiring movies, The Revenant, DiCaprio slept in animal carcasses and even ate a raw bison liver. Talking about eating raw meat, he said in an interview,
“Because the fake liver they gave me didn’t look real. Arthur, the Native American actor I was working with, had been eating liver all day while I was sitting there eating a big piece of Play-Doh. I had to give it a shot. But I only did it twice, and my reaction is up on screen. That’s instinct.”
And that is how the star finally won an Oscar after multiple nominations over the years.
Leonardo DiCaprio Survived A Bear Fight For The Revenant
To say The Wolf of Wall Street went to the extremes for The Revenant would not be an overstatement. For the star underwent extreme physical challenges to bring life to Hugh Glass as best as he could. And his best was undoubtedly the best since he finally won an Oscar for it.
From eating raw bison liver to sleeping in animal carcasses, Leonardo DiCaprio also endured a very physically challenging fight with a bear in the movie. The action sequence went on for four days, in extreme weather conditions, in which DiCaprio continued to be thrown around, thrashed, and mauled by a guy wearing a bear suit. Sans bear, the star was tied up with multiple wires to drag him around each time the ‘bear’ mauled him with a force equal to the bear’s power.
In his more than three-decades-long career, the star continues to prove he is every bit deserving of the fame and acclaim he has received over the years.
The Revenant is available to stream on Prime Video.
