"I had more fun making it”: Brad Pitt Hated Working With Tom Cruise So Much He Loved Filming $327M Depressing Thriller That Was Refused by Denzel Washington

Brad Pitt’s filmography would make anyone jealous. In his multiple decades-long Hollywood career, he has done films that he found to be stimulating and fun. One such movie that he loved filming was Se7en (1995) with Morgan Freeman. In fact, he loved it so much that he said that it was better to work in the David Fincher-directed movie than the one he did with Tom Cruise.

Pitt starred with Cruise in the 1994 film Interview with the Vampire, but he didn’t have a great time shooting it. There were rumors about Cruise and Pitt having a fallout on the sets of the film due to their opposite styles of working. Later on, the Fight Club star gave his side of the story in a couple of interviews.

Brad Pitt Loved Working On Se7en More Than Interview With The Vampire

Se7en featured Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, and it grossed $327 million on a $34 million budget. The dark thriller film attracted Pitt because he was looking to make a project where his character was flawed even though he had good intentions. In a 1995 interview with The Morning Call, the actor said:

“I was looking for something with a documentary feel. I wanted to play a character who has flaws, who has good intentions but makes mistakes. I also wanted to kill the mythic thing – this, like, larger-than-life thing about me.”

In contrast, his time on Interview with the Vampire wasn’t fun at all. He hated the long shoots in the bleak London weather. He said “Se7en is dark too, but I had more fun making it. It’s a dark subject matter, but for me personally, it wasn’t depressing.”

Pitt garnered a lot of praise for the role but his character wasn’t written with him in mind. Denzel Washington was the one who the makers wanted to cast. But Washington couldn’t see himself in the role at all and after seeing the film he thought that the role was made for Pitt.

Brad Pitt And His Alleged Rivalry With Tom Cruise

The Morning Call reported that Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise supposedly clashed on the sets of Interview with the Vampire because of their different working styles. Pitt apparently loved partying while Cruise was ultra-professional and didn’t like his co-star’s lighthearted demeanor. But during The Morning Call interview, the Se7en actor trashed such rumors. He said:

“That had nothing to do with it. I just didn’t like the guy I played in ‘Vampire’ because the movie was about being a victim. I felt like we did that movie in the dark for six months.”

What made matters worse in the Tom Cruise movie was that there wasn’t a script and Pitt didn’t even get earlier drafts. The star said in an EW interview, “There was no script. I knew the book, and… In the book, it is a guy going on this search for discovery… But then I got the script two weeks before we started shooting.”

It has been almost three decades since Interview with the Vampire was released and both actors moved on to other projects long ago. On the work front, Brad Pitt is again teaming up with David Fincher for a 2023 film called The Killer. This time the actor is producing it.

Se7en is available on Amazon Prime Video. The Killer will release on Netflix on November 10, 2023.
