Perhaps, as the mixed martial arts-filled movie Warrior, gave its stomping protagonists a backstory, the movie received baffling praises and performed well at the box office. Nonetheless, the British actor Tom Hardy’s acting and dedication to his character are indeed worth the praise.
Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton who play the beefy brothers tempted to enter the same fight-off, had been through some rough training. However, nothing compares to the 45-year-old’s particularly challenging diet for Warrior. Although Hardy is quite habituated to diets and hardcore training prior to a movie, his Warrior diet and training indeed knocked him off.
Tom Hardy’s Hardcore Training For Warrior
The well-choreographed fight sequences are the main essence of Warrior, the mixed martial arts-filled movie that delivers the story of two brothers. Bringing out the raw emotions and the rare truth, writer-director Gavin O’Connor explored the story of redemption and forgiveness through his 2011 film.
Although the slow-burn setting that weaves the characters into the storyline is quite phenomenal, audiences simply divert their obsession toward the testosterone-filled fight scenes. Tom Hardy who plays the role of former wrestling prodigy Tommy Riordan Conlon in Warrior, went through some ruthless training in real life to bring out the authenticity onscreen.
Discussing his disciplined approach to fitness, Tom Hardy shared his training regimens with The Guardian.
“I did two hours boxing a day, two hours muay thai, two hours ju jitsu followed by two hours choreography and two hours of weightlifting seven days a week for three months. So come on! You have to really want to do that, so it was a challenge,” Hardy mentioned.
Dedicating himself to his character, Hardy went through an iconic diet and challenging training for his movie, which made his performance stand out. To bring out the rough yet vulnerable MMA fighter, the 45-year-old not only followed an intense training regimen but also adhered to a strict diet filled with mostly chicken and broccoli, on a daily basis.
The Aftermath Of Tom Hardy’s Warrior Diet
Tom Hardy’s intense training and strict diet indeed paid off when he appeared as an MMA fighter in Warrior. However, the process took a huge physical and mental toll on the actor. Admitting to Total Film, the 45-year-old mentioned being, “foul-tempered, belligerent, and unreasonable” due to his training and diet.
Recalling the aftermath of his fitness training, Tom Hardy stated how often he pissed people off due to his temperament issue. Feeling like he was a different man, after the training, the 45-year-old had a hard time controlling his mood, on the set of Warrior.
“I felt on edge all the time because I’m very sensitive and I hate pissing people off – but I fu*ked a lot of people off on Warrior”. Tom Hardy mentioned.
Although Hardy credited the 2011 Gavin O’Connor movie for teaching him valuable lessons, he couldn’t fathom the anger issues that come tagged along. “99 percent of the job is imagining other people’s insecurities, and that went right out the f*cking window!” he stated. However, he was still grateful for the experience of working alongside O’ Conner and his co-star Joel Egerton.
