Harry Potter star Emma Watson has kept her distance from the silver screen since the 2019 film The Little Women. Starting her career with the very popular Harry Potter franchise, she made a name for herself as the Hogwarts student Hermione Granger. Although she has had several hits, except for her work in the fantasy adventure franchise, she has also been quite open regarding her doubts about pursuing an acting career.
During an interview with Teen Vogue, the English actress opened up about joining university and her acting career, suggesting that she might not be as passionate about acting as she is about her studies.
Emma Watson on Persuing an Acting Career
Emma Watson starred in the first Harry Potter movie at the age of 11. However, despite being one of the prominent parts of one of the biggest franchises in the world, the actress considered quitting the film series at a time as she wanted to complete her studies.
“I’ve been saying that I wanted to go to university since I was eleven, so if they didn’t let me, I’d be pretty upset,” she said. During an earlier interview, Watson shared her excitement to join college and further pursue her studies.
However, she did not seem to share the same excitement for her acting career. “There’s not, like, a burning passion in me that I have to act, and I don’t care what I do,” she said. And she also mentioned what type of characters she looked forward to playing in the future.
The Bling Ring star shared that she wanted to portray such characters that felt as strong as her Harry Potter role. “Until something comes along that I feel as strongly about as I did Hermione—like, I felt that it was life or death—I don’t want to act again,” she stated during her interview with Teen Vogue.
Emma Watson Was Concerned About Her Acting
The Harry Potter cast, including its lead star Daniel Radcliffe, have worked hard to break out the Harry Potter image. He has starred in multiple films, portraying a variety of characters, and has proved his potential to be an actor. It has been the same for his co-star Emma Watson as well, as she has also portrayed a number of varied characters on the screen.
However, having spent a decade playing the same character, she worried that her Harry Potter role might make her way into her new ventures as well. The actress has shared that she has played multiple characters, including a “crazy LA valley girl, a biblical girl, an American high school girl, an 18th century period girl,” but she still worried that “all that’s going to come out Hermione.” Watson was last seen in the HBO Harry Potter special after her last on-screen appearance in the 2019 film The Little Women.
