Jim Caviezel Was Accidentally Whipped By A Cast Member
As reported by Today, Jim Caviezel underwent an extensive eight-hour makeup process to authentically replicate the wounds of Christ from head to toe for The Passion of the Christ. The film includes a disturbing sequence where Jesus is brutally whipped after being nailed to the cross, depicting the violent and harrowing Crucifixion scene.
During the filming of The Passion of the Christ, Gibson instructed the Roman soldier actors to lash their whips overhand towards a whipping post behind Caviezel, ensuring the camera wouldn’t reveal the lack of impact. Unfortunately, a mishap occurred when one of the actors accidentally missed the post and struck Caviezel instead.
Caviezel recalled that the intense lashing left him in excruciating pain, causing him to lose his breath completely. Surprisingly, the experience also brought out a side of him he never knew existed. “I may be playing Jesus, but I felt like Satan at that moment,” the actor said. However, the accidental lashing wasn’t the end of his hardships on set.
The second whipping incident caused Caviezel to injure his wrist, leading to the use of visual effects for the remaining lashings. The Roman soldier actors used sticks without leather tails, while Caviezel mimicked the hits. Special effects were later added to create the appearance of wounds after the blows were inflicted.
