Tom Cruise is the star everyone wants to become. A lot of young actors dream of having the kind of stardom and wealth the Top Gun 2 actor has amassed. But very few have the dedication needed to reach the top, especially the kind of commitment Cruise shows towards performing his own stunts.

Now, Dakota Johnson too has joined the line. She wants to become Cruise and do the kind of daredevil stunts he is famous for in her upcoming Spide-Verse film called Madame Web. But does she have it in her to show the kind of dogged determination, Cruise has? As per one of her co-stars, she does.

Tom Cruise recently became the talking point of the internet again not just because of the Mission: Impossible 7 trailer, but also because he performed his own stunts in it. The scene in the trailer where Ethan Hunt drives off a cliff on a motorcycle was all Cruise. Even in Top Gun 2, he piloted multiple jets. The only one he didn’t was the F-18. So his dedication to doing stunt work is unmatched.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Dakota Johnson revealed that she wanted to copy Tom Cruise’s style of doing his own stunts for Madame Web. She said, “I feel like I can probably do some Tom Cruise stuff.” The writer of the cover story, Britt Hennemuth, even noted that the normally delicate-looking actress has been packing on muscles to carry out the wirework.

This comment by Johnson made many assume that she will be playing the Julia Carpenter version of the spider-woman. However, that’s not yet confirmed by any of the official sources. But the main question is, will the Persuasion star be able to do those stunts? Co-star Richard E. Grant thinks so.

In the Vanity Fair Interview, there’s a little snippet from her Persuasion co-star Richard E. Grant. He complimented Dakota Johnson for her discipline and having a no-nonsense approach. Grant said that her behavior was surprising to him because of her privileged background. After all, she’s the daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith.

So Grant thought he would be working with someone similar to Paris Hilton. But she proved him wrong. Here’s what he said:

“Dakota’s very disciplined. Considering who her parents are, you project an idea of somebody coming from that amount of privilege. You think that she might be—how do I put this?—that there might be a Paris Hilton element to her character. But there wasn’t. Instead, I think what that background has given her is a great assurance of who she is. I mean, she’s 32, but she has a no-shit-Sherlock approach.”

The upcoming Madame Web film has generated quite a buzz amongst fans of the Spiderverse. It now remains to be seen if it can match up to the high standards already set by Spider-Man and other adjacent films.

Madame Web will be released on 16 February 2024.
