James Mangold is a movie director and filmmaker and is very experienced and exceptional at his job. Over the years in the industry, he has directed many movies in multiple successful franchises and his praise in Hollywood is always sky-high. Recently, he was hired by DCU co-CEO James Gunn for both scriptwriting and directing Swamp Thing, Gunn’s next best thing.
Swamp Thing will follow the story of Swamp Thing, a superhero of the DCU franchise, who is a humanoid/plant-based creature. Although it mainly fights to protect its home, many situations arise that force it out of its habitat into the humans territory. The character is highly famous in the DCU culture and fans have been begging the franchise for a movie or a show related to the character.
James Mangold Will Direct Swamp Thing Under James Gunn
James Mangold has been in the industry for almost three decades. Ever since his directorial debut with Heavy, Mangold has taken the road to success without ever looking back. He is famously known for directing many of the X-Men franchise movies, mainly the movies surrounding Wolverine. Currently, James Mangold has been scouted by James Gunn for directing a piece on potentially one of the most anticipated and fan-requested characters. Alongside the directing, he will also be responsible for scriptwriting and fans are quite happy as well as excited as to how the movie turns out to be.
“The idea of making kind of almost a kind of noir/mystery/horror film about about a guy who wakes up and he’s this thing and he’s out. There’s an amnesiac quality of like how did I get here and who did this to me. So I’m envisioning kind of horror/noir film following a creature that can’t be seen trying to piece together from fragments of memory, what happened and who did it.”
During an interview with Happy Sad Confused, James Mangold revealed the fact that the movie will be about a character who is suffering from amnesia and is struggling to find his place among humans and animals. While his appearance is completely that of a horrifying monster, from what we know according to the comics, he is actually trying to find out how and why he ended up like this.
James Mangold Inspired By Christopher Nolan’s Memento?
Christopher Nolan’s Memento is a movie completely based on psychological thriller and mystery. The movie was adapted from a short story, Memento Mori written by Jonathan Nolan, the younger brother of the filmmaker. The film that was later projected on the screen depicted Guy Pearce’s protagonist suffering from anterograde amnesia, as he becomes subject to short-term memory loss and attempts to backtrace his path to find out the killer of his wife. The plot essentially tells the tragic story of a man who tries to figure out how he ended up in a situation such as this and as the story unfolds, it turns into him trying to avenge the woman he loved.
James Mangold’s description of Swamp Thing is very similar to Christopher Nolan‘s plot of Memento. Although the Logan director has not yet said anything that connects him to Nolan, it is quite clear that both of these plot designs are quite similar. Moreover, Nolan, the leading filmmaker of the 21st century is a pretty big personality in Hollywood, and every director in the industry respects his work and are also familiar with most of his movies. Nevertheless, only time will tell if Mangold truly took inspiration from the Dunkirk director’s breakthrough film.
