Samuel L Jackson once disagreed with a director over his character’s hairstyle

Following some of his most iconic roles, it’s safe to say that Samuel L Jackson knows what hairstyle would suit his characters and would be able to express something more about his them. And even though most of the time, filmmakers were on board with Jackson’s choices about the hairdo of his characters, there was one time when one director wasn’t too engrossed in Jackson’s idea. Even though the Pulp Fiction star refused to disclose the name of the director, he didn’t back away from expressing his distaste about the situation and was not ready to work with him again. He said,

“I have only had one director who had a mandate for my hair, and I don’t work [with] him anymore,”

However, this wasn’t the only time when the actor didn’t see eye to eye with a director regarding a particular hairstyle, but that situation would ultimately result in one of his most iconic characters.

Samuel L Jackson’s iconic hairstyle in Pulp Fiction was a result of a mistake

It’s kind of impossible to imagine anyone in the role of Jules Winnfield other than Samuel L Jackson with the iconic Jheri Curl. However, this wasn’t the initial choice for the character’s hairstyle in Pulp Fiction, as originally, Quentin Tarantino chose an afro hairstyle for Jackson’s character. But things would eventually change for the best after the production assistant would buy a Jheri wig instead, and even though Tarantino was pissed, Jackson would step in and state,

“And then I was like, ‘No, this is totally right!’ I put it on and we had this whole thing, and he started, you know, fussing about it, and I’m going, ‘look, man: NWA (now was huge), everybody in NWA had a Jheri curl at that time, and this was perfect for Jules in that neighborhood.'”
