“I don’t want to repeat history”: James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad Star is “Hungry to get away from” Action Movies

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad Star is “Hungry to get away from” Action Movies

Actors can easily find themselves typecast in Hollywood action movie roles that do not allow them to display their full range of talents. For example, Jai Courtney, well known for his performances in blockbusters like James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and Alan Taylor’s Terminator Genisys, has firsthand experience with this.

After his first collaboration with Tom Cruise in 2012’s Jack Reacher, Courtney went on to land the role of Bruce Willis’ son in the fifth and final installment in the Die Hard film series, A Good Day to Die Hard. His portrayal of the supervillain Captain Boomerang in the DC Extended Universe films Suicide Squad (2016), The Suicide Squad (2021), and The Flash (2023) further proved his talent.

Without a doubt, Courtney has made a name for himself in the action genre, but the repetitive nature of these roles is quite an issue for the Australian actor.

Jai Courtney’s Escape to Break Free From Action Movie Stereotypes

Jai Courtney, an Australian actor, is determined to show the world that he is capable of excelling in roles outside the action movies. The actor thinks that stepping outside of his comfort zone will not only push him as an artist but also lead to opportunities for more varied and significant projects. He told DuJour:

“I’ve done heavy action and that’s a lot of fun, but it’s something I’m hungry to get away from. I love doing action—obviously I just signed on to a big franchise—but it also means that for the next job, I don’t want to repeat history.”

The actor, 37, has always had a fascination with evolution. He claimed that his goal has been to find a way to improve on what he already does well:

“I think it’s important to remember that several years ago I would have given it all to be in the position I’m in now. But I feel like I’m at the start, and there’s still that drive to keep going, to get better and grow as a performer.”

Therefore, Courtney has no issue with the idea of performing extra acts in addition to taking on more challenging tasks. He further explained:

“I don’t have a clear sense of like ticking boxes as far as roles are concerned. I’ve been getting some incredible opportunities, and those are the things that dreams are made of.”

Jai Courtney discussed his portrayal of Captain Boomerang in The Suicide Squad with Showbiz Cheat Sheet. He said he approved of James Gunn’s playful interactions with his returning role in the 2016 film:

“Really only in the way that every film feels different. It’s a different energy. We’re under different direction. James is a wonderful energy to have around at the helm to lead his troops into battle. It was just a new experience like any film would be.”

Courtney has starred in a few franchise movies, including A Good Day to Die Hard and Terminator: Genisys. However, he claimed that he views each movie as a unique experience.

“I think the interesting thing about this, it’s hard to escape the comparisons, but it’s a different film. The property, it obviously has the same source material, but it’s such dense material that James was able to start from scratch really and do his own independent adaptation. So there wasn’t a lot of concern. I’m not out there shooting this comparing the experience to the other one in a way. It stands alone in the story it tells and it also just  stood alone in the experience we had making it.”

The last time we saw the actor was as Digger Harkness/Captain Boomerang in Andy Muschietti’s The Flash, which was met with mixed reviews from critics, who praised its humor, action sequences, and performances but criticized the climax and special effects.

Suicide Squad, The Flash, and The Suicide Squad are streaming on Max.
